My husband is on this 1 unit will drop it 30 to 40 the Doctor said but wondered it anyone knows how long it takes?   His sugar level was 500 plus so he took 12 units it was supper does and extra but he didnt dare to it should drop him to around 120 or little more this was at 6:30 pm and now it is 10:49 pm his blood sugar level is 262 now but it is suppose to be fast acting they said but wow taking awhile to get it to this 4 1/2 hours. They are having him start out  20 units at night with Levemir for few days and check every morning to see if it is around 120.
Thanks Sassy

Sorry...but I'm a tad confused.   I'm having difficulty understanding your question.
If you need to know about the fast acting insulin, Novolog:~  It usually starts working almost immediately.  It reaches its strongest level of action within 2 hours, but may linger in the bloodstream for up to 6  hours.  We are all different. and one's actual results may vary with all sorts of factors.  http://www.novolog.com/
Levermir is a long acting, basal insulin.  It acts at a steady rate, and is supposed to control sugars for 24 hours.  http://www.levemir-us.com/
In the mornings, our sugars often go up.  This is called the "dawn phenomenon."  The liver tends to release glucose into the bloodstream shortly after waking.  It helps to eat a breakfast higher in protein, and lower in carbohydrate.  In that way, your husband may be able to offset that effect.
Hope that helped some.
If you could, please use a 5 font size or larger?  Many of us long time diabetics have sight issues, and it is hard for us to see the smaller fonts.  Maybe that's why I couldn't see your punctuation...maybe my visual problem.  Thanks, Sassy!  HUGS!

Hello
I take novolog and I take 22 units with my meal, however you will need to really write down all your numbers so that the doctor can take a look at it and see if to give more insulin, my sugar sometimes run high and one night when it was 262 I took novolog 20 units and it was 94 when I awoke but I did that only once, although I would not advocate doing that because a low could come about but it seems to me that 10 units brought it half down so you need to speak with the doctor about it to see if you need any changes, I started at 10 units and eventually had to go up to 18 and then 22, but I spoke to the doctor and also a diabetic nurse who told me to make sure I write all of my numbers down and what time I checked before and after,it could be two weeks of checking breakfast, lunch, dinner, then take the results to the doctor so that he could see if more insulin was needed at certain times more than others, my doctor told me that it was okay to give my self a few units more when I am going to eat and the sugar is already high, after awhile you get some idea how much insulin you might need by looking at your numbers during certain times, mine is mostly consistently high in the evening so the doctor adjusted the insulin for that time.

Till my husband was retired he was on pills. We could never bring a high reading down. But he had open heart surgery in 2005 and they told him that using insulin was easier to take care of and less expencive too.
He takes 22 units of Lantis in the morning and most of the time if he is good during the day he don't have to take anything else....but if he has a reading of 150 or more he takes 2 units of Novolog for every 50 points he is over......if it is 150 he takes 2 units, 200 he takes 4 units etc..
Thank heavens so far he don't use a lot of Novolog. But it is really nice to be able to bring the reading down if it does get high.......
Even he ( the big baby) suggests others that are on pills to talk to their doctor about insulin.....It sure makes him feel like he is in control now.

Sassy,
That is a lot, as people replied before....he really needs to take a log of all his blood sugars and take them to the doctor to prescribe him a correct amount of units to take. I am taking the Novolog and my doctor prescribed me:
anything over 150 before eating, every 50 over equals 1 unit and for every 30 carbs equals 1 unit....
I am not saying that this is the correct amount of units for your husband, but the doctor really needs to determine what would be best for his diabetes.
John
