Dear Mom of 3, I just recently had my doctor sign the medical necessity paper for me to get the pump. I went on line to the mini-med site. They have the paperwork right there for you to download, also if you give them all your information, they do all the running around for you. You should probably tell your Dr that you are going to be doing this, so he will have some idea when the representative from Mini-med contacts him/her. All they needed to get me started was my Drs name, and phone # and then my health insurance information. Within one week, they had the letter of medical necessity from my Dr. Not sure if you are interested in the mini-med pump, but there web site was very informative. I am surprised that your Dr isn't supportive of you wanting the pump, my Dr who has been not too helpful in the past, jumped up and down when I told him I wanted the pump. Best of luck to you. Dee |

Mom, two things quickly come to mind. 1)does ur dr actually work with patients with the pump? and 2)can u switch to an endo who will agree to put u on a pump? Maybe you can look for one over the phone, and ask the secretary or whoever answers the phone if that certain dr works with pump patients. It could be that ur endo doesn't work with pumpers or doesn't have too much experience with them. Also, I don't see why any dr wouldn't want to help his patient get a pump when he/she is taking 6 shots a day! That sounds sort of crazy! Anyway, I wish you luck and let us know! |

Oh Wow Momof3,,,,, I am glad you are going to be in the market for a new doctor!!!!!! He does not seem to understand how this is affecting your diabetes with all the stress of trying to get him to see how the pump would be of help to you!!!! My heart just broke when you said you have been asked not to go on field trips any longer! I can imagine how much that hurt you deep inside!!!! All of you who take six shots a day,,,, I am in deep respect for you,,,,, my three a day are enough for this type 1!!! I am glad you came back Mom of three to let us know how things went,,,, but I am really angry at your doctor for thinking that the level of "control" that you have managed to attain is good or enough!!! Proud of you for standing your ground and looking for an experienced doctor dealing with pumpers, and most of all a CARING doctor!! You deserve no less dear!!! Try and lift the chin,,, relax a little, take a walk more often, and Smile!!! Things will and can IMPROVE!!!! Heart Hugs, Cuddles |

Dear Mom of 3 I think the school's attitude STINKS. Would they treat a diabetic child who attended this school with the same attitude? They need educating. People with any special kind of health needs should be included in all types of community activities. Does it really matter if somebody walks a little slower than the rest or needs an extra few minutes of time. What sort of attitude is this school passing on to its students? It's not unreasonable to ask others for a few minutes of their time so you can look after yourself. They need to learn to be more considerate to other people and I'm sorry to learn that you have been hurt by their awful attitude. They should know better. Holly |

When I was getting my pump I worked both angles. I kept haggleing the endo so I can get one but I also worked with minimed and my insurance at the time so I knew what was the next step. Endo wanted me to attend a certain education course but insurance said no but I could get the same thing with the minimed rep. In fact I had pump here for about a month before getting hooked up!!!! My advise is do everything in your power, even if it means switching doctors. Good Luck!!!! |

Maybe you should find another Dr. I have had diabetes for 33 years and there have been several times I have had to change Dr just for the fact I was not getting what I need. |

I read all the other messages and I agree... Your dr. should let you go on the pump if you want to (unless there is a severe problem).I got my pump in 2003. I went to a information meeting to hear about what is expected from the diabetic. You will have to choose a company to go with(such as mini med,et al),fill out the paperwork, then the company talks with your insurance carrier. I recived a video tape of what the pump would look like and act. hope this helps. My insurance (plus a bit of help from family ) covered most of it out of $6,000 I only had to pay $600. |

Who needs pain in the ass doctors. Look around for a new one an let them know that pump therapy is for you. Don't let some punk doctor tell YOU what you need. The info is out there. Pump are the only way to go. As for injecting, I used to let anyone who was around see me inject. I used to draw up my insulin waiting in traffic on Route 128 in MA. If someone thought I was doing drugs, who cares, let em. Be interesting to get pulled over and have to explain to a statee that it's just too bad that people are busy bodies. At restaurants I used to draw it up down by my side and inject into my stomach, servers and food runners saw me do it all the time. Let them deal. It's better in the end. I also used to encourage all me friends to inject me, so they wouldn't be so squeemish.
Oh, and All Caps means you are shouting. |
