I have really, really poor diabetes control. I don't like taking my Insulin and I only tend to take it when I'm feeling really dire. Everyone just assumes I'm forgetful and careless. I just wanted to know if there was anyone else doing this, I know its a bad habit and I will reap the repurcussions in my later years, but for now its not affecting me.

You sid for now It's not affecting you..........SAYS WHO YOU! you may not think that it's affecting you but it is.  You are very young.  Do what you have to do to have a long and healthy life ahead of you.  You do want that don't you?  Catherine please read what the other members here have posted.  type 1 diabetes is no joke and you need to take your meds and insulin.  my son passed away from type 1 diabetes because he was doing the exact samething what you are doing.  he went blind, needed a kidney transplant he also had liver problems and when the drs told him all of this that is when he decided ok he will take his insulin and by then it was toooooo late.  he figured he will get back on track.  2 weeks after being told his kidneys was failing and he needed dialyist(sp) and he had to get his leg taken off.  he was gone. he passed away.  SO PLEASE LISTEN TO US.

PLEASE POST AND LET US KNOW HOW YOU ARE DOING.

I know it varies from person to person, but what is the longest honeymoon period anyone has heard of?  Melanie, are you a type 1 or a type 2?  I guess I'm just shocked that a honeymoon period could last 2 years.  And a little jealous.  I didn't have a honeymoon period at all.  I literally went from healthy to an extremely fast decline in health and although they waited about 3 or 4 weeks to actually put me on insulin I should have been started on it right away and when all tests came back the doctors were absolutely shocked I wasn't in a coma as my levels were averaging 1100 at that point!  Mind you, by this point I was having extreme difficulty staying awake, but I was (just barely) managing.  My A1c was waaaaaay off the charts, they estimated around 19!  Anyway, I wish I would have had a honeymoon period because it might have been a lot better for me and easier to accept if I could have eased myself into the insulin injections and learning about the disease.

I'm type 1, been so since the offset.
I was very ill for a long time before they diagnosed me.
My doc thought it was kidney disease or something. So one day, was at school, doing sport (I used to love school), and felt terribly ill, went home after nearly fainting, that same afternoon, the hospital rang and was rushed in there.
I had a honeymoon period of about 2 months, I WISH it was two years!!
That was September 1999.
Be well all
xx
ps. Happy Yule

I really am sorry that you think the diabetes is not affecting you now. You really have a lot to learn.

Having diabetes is like having termites. You may not see the damage but the little fellows are eating away inside just like diabetes.

You need to wise up before you  see the complications. Then its too late. You can't repair the damage.

I do have to say that Bar hit it right on the spot with this comment!

Thats so very true! I was young when I got diagnosed, and did the same thing, wouldn't take my insulin, never checked my sugars, but I am now 28, and have some problems. I wish I would of had some serious support in my not so honeymoon fase...I do hope you come back, and use any or all of us for some love help and support, and know that you can't do this alone, and thats why we are all here!

Hi all, I only just remembered a post I'd made on here two years ago.  I haven't improved much, in fact I think I've probably gotten worse.  My last Hba1c couldn't be read by the machine in hospital it was that high.  Since my last posts I've been in hospital twice with DKA, and probably should have been in more times but haven't been.  After a particually emotional time I lost over 20 kilograms in about a month and it stayed off.  Looking over your messages now, it's really starting to scare me whats happening inside, and beginning to show the wear on the outside.  I don't find it easy to just 'start' taking insulin in the proper manner again, as putting weight on terrifies the hell out of me.
Thanks for your words of advice and encouragement though, every message does help me to see there are other people out there just like me, even though sometimes it does feel like there is no one else but me.
I hope you are all well and happy.

If you have your insulin/carb ratio correct then you wont gain weight.
Just remember with not taking your insulin you are a long time dead.
It's a very slow painful death before the end comes too.
I hope this sounds harsh it is meant too.

All I can say is you are still in DENIAL.  I was in denial for almost 5 years...the docs were wrong, I wasn't diabetic, I didn't need meds, etc.  All I could think of was that if anyone knew I was DIABETIC, they would think only one thing....I was fat and lazy. I was diagnosed at age 55 after I became inactive after knee surgery. I trained horses up to that time so was able to control sugars through exercise...even though I was fat, I wasn't lazy. If you are young...PLEASE, take care of yourself. You don't want the complications that come with this disease. Your life can be full with proper management.

It takes years for the damage to show in some cases, but the day your diabetes starts is the day it starts doing some harm in the body.  Chances are you will get some complications in the future, but it can be sooner or later, depending how you take care of yourself.  Do your best to take shots and test.  Also know you will feel better with normal bg's.

I didn't go on insulin for nine months. I broke down slowly. That was 34 years ago.

I can relate. And the thing about it is that you know what you have to do. When I was first diagnoised 24 years ago. I didn't want to take them either it was my mom that was all over me on taking it. You need to remember something very important. Your actions not only affect you but those around you. I didn't learn that till a few years ago.

When your sugars are too high you become impossible to deal with (that is if you are like I was) Always drinking to keeping your mouth moist. Always using the bathroom, tired and fatiqued. When you do this you aren't only hurting your body but you are hurting the ones you love. They are trying to understand (even though they don't know exactly what you are going thru) they want to see you live a full and happy life. And by not taking your meds you aren't going to live that life. If you keep doing what you are doing you may not have a tomarrow.

I can't count how many times I wond up in the hospital after being diagnoised with bloodsugars over 500 and the Dr.'s and nurses always coming down on me about takeing my insulin and checking my blood. I can tell you this. I was in the hospital at least every other month due to High sugars. There were times when I would drive myself in. And that is just as bad as Driving under the influence.

Right now you say that when the time comes I will reep the repercutions of my actions that I am doing right now. But when it actually hits you aren't going to be saying that. YOu are going to be asking yourself WHY? WHY didn't I just take my medication and follow the Dr.'s advise?

You need to ask yourself RIGHT this minute. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT in my life? If it is your family, friends what ever then ask yourself. AT WHAT COST WILL I GO THRU TO KEEP (THEM / IT) IN MY LIFE? It is totally up to you. No one can make you take your medicine or check your blood. YOU and ONLY YOU alone can deside the fate of your life and how it will affect others.

This didn't hit me till I was pregnate with my first child. Unfortunately Kyra didn't make it to full term. They took her at 20 weeks gestational. She had pottersyndrom which is where one kidney developed but was cystic and the other didn't develope at all. That was almost 14 years ago. During those 5 months I tried my best to do everything that the Dr.'s told me to do but I didn't. So a year later when I had Deanna I did everything I possibly could. I wasn't perfect at doing everything but I took my meds and yes I had very low sugars with that as well. When she was born she was jondice and her bloodsugar was high because right before the c-section my sugar was going low. Then after having her 18 months later I had my son his blood sugar was low when he was born and he was jondice. They are now 11 and 13 years old. My son is ODD with ADHD tendioncies. My step daughters are ADD.

So please at least of all things take your insulin. That little pin poke isn't as bad as if you winde up in the hospital with collapsed veins and they have to put  cathidor in your neck or even take blood out of your feet. It isn't fun.

I am seriously thinking about going on the insulin pump not due to me not taking my meds but because it is very difficult to find the right dose for me.

Sorry so long.
Take care of yourself.
Cyndi

You're not the only one who does this. I also do this. Besides my diabetes, I have bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, panic attacks, and social phobias. My self-injury besides cutting (yes I will admit to doing it) is not taking my insulin like I'm supposed to. This has landed me in DKA two times both in ICU. Hasn't happened lately because I seem to take it when I come close. I'm on medication to help with this but it doesn't always work properly.

I guess the reason I do it is because I think that it will help everyone around me in the long run if I'm not around, but then I realize that my husband needs me and I take my insulin which is usually right before I'm getting sick. In my manic moods I don't think that I need it because nothing can hurt me and I'm too busy to take it. If I'm depressed I'm too down to take it. I dont want to get out of bed.

My husband took himself off his pills (type 2) for 3 years. He lost 50 lbs and seemed ok. He had a painless heart attack in october. The Dr said since he did not take his meds his body was feeding on his muscels this caused the heart attack and being diabetic he could not feel it. He is now insulin dependant and the Dr says he is fragile. He has gone from a strong healthy appearing man to a frail old man . He looks 80 but is only 56. Please take your meds as I see the results daily. As our Dr says mother nature can be cruel.
