Hi I am brand new to the group and also to diabetes. I had my annual physical and my blood sugar with fasting was 137. I don't know if this is real high or what?. My Dr. also had me see a diabetes educator (RN) and he wants me to check it once a day. In all your experiences which would be the best time to check it. the RN said to check it at various times each day (only once a day tho.) Any suggestions. Thank you ahead of time for your help.
thanks again,
Joseph

Welcome Joseph glad to have you join us here.

137  is a bit high but not too high, I forget what fasting number should be but want to say 80 to 115. I know we are required to keep our sugar between 80 to 130-140. You should check your sugars before you eat  and 2 hrs after a meal ..to see how that meal effected you. After you know what you can and cannot eat checking your sugars when you get up before you eat or drink any thing ( fasting ) and at least after 1 meal ( 2hrs after meal ) and before you go to bed. You want your sugars above 100 before going to bed so you don't have a low in the middle of the night..so if it's a 100 or lower eat a snack before going to bed.

Hang in there Joseph you'll get the hang of it beofre long.

Hey Joseph....I'm Cheryl been T1 for 33 yrs. and currently have no complications from diabetes..... I really don't know the criteria or numbers that are desired for T2's.... but 137 isn't all that bad for a T1.....
Learning about your diabetes is a matter of time.... as Mary suggested, you can test at different points in the day to see where your levels are.... esp. when you're trying to figure out what foods do what to your bs's....and man, Joseph, we are all so different in that area.....
I know test strips are ungodly expensive and most of us without insurances have to be well aware of how many we use.....but if you can test more than once a day without financial difficulty, that is the best way to figure out how your bs's are running through the day and/or after certains foods......this is one of the most important tasks you will have to do and it only comes with time.  Sometimes a journal is helpful at recording readings 2 hrs. after certain foods along with notation of what the food was until you can remember how such foods react with you.....  At first it will seem monumental, but after you get use to a routine, it becomes second hand as most here will tell you.
One thing before I sign.....if when you post you could use a size 4 or 5 font, it will be easier for our members with eyesight difficulties to read your post and respond... much appreciated..... so kick back, sit a spell and we look forward to getting to know you.  see ya.  Peace,Cheryl

Welcome aboard. Im type 2 also. My dr told me to test once a day also after I got mine in control. 137 not bad. I had 350 when I found out that I had diabetes. Dr told me to check in this way.
Day one morn.
Day two noon
Day three before supper
Day four before bedtime
Day 5 start all over
After you do this take all readings add them up and divide by number of days, this gives you your avg.
Hope this helps
Dwight

Hi Joseph,
Welcome to the group.  I have been a t-2 for over 37 years and have had some complications but none to stop my enjoyment of my life.  What I want to know is when was the Blood Glucose (BG) test performed?  Had you eaten before the test?  The fasting BG should be from 80 - 120 and no higher than 140, 2 hours after eating.  In about 3 months the doctor should have an HbA1c test done and the results of that will shoe how your control has been for the last 2-3 months and results should be <7%.  Has the doctor suggested any medicines?  You should see a Registered Dietician and a Certified Diabetes Educator.  I would join the American Diabetes Association as they have a monthly magazine that is full of information & subscribe to Diabetes SelfManagement which publishes a bimonthly mag.  I wish you a happy life living with this disease.

Joseph.. Welcome to the group.
I was diagnosed 3 years ago...with an a1c of 6.2 and one fasting (done in lab) above 126 and one below. I made some lifestyle changes and have remained on 15mg of actos and those numbers came down pretty quick.

You are in fact lucky to have been tested and diagnosed but with "modest" numbers. I think the RN will be so helpful in getting you on the right track and of course if you setttle in with us here and read postings and answers and ask some questions that will be very helpful, too. Those readings you are taking will help the Diabetes educator to help you in getting control.

thank you all again, no I am  not on any medication yet and I hope not to be if I can keep it under control myself. I talked to my nurse that handles the diabetes education for my clinic. She said my Dr. will most likely give me the hbA1c test after 3 months when I go see him again. But I am going to contact him to see if that is going to be true or not. I found out with all my other problems you have to stay on top of the Dr.to make sure they do not drop the ball. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to try and help me out with this. At first I thought now what else am I going to get I have just about everything else you can think of. It really bummed me out big time. And it still does to some extent. But reading some of the posts and you all helping me I guess it just another thing I'm going to have to deal with. The perks of being 51  .
