Hey Trav how are you?
I've always respected your views on things, and you spend a lot of time and effort into researching things. So I have a question for you.
I had blood work done and the Doc didn't like my  cholesterol numbers (HDL 248, LDL 176) He wants to put me on a low dose of a statin, Zocor. I see him this coming Thursday, and I'm doing research on the meds vs diet, so I can go to him with some concrete facts to not take the drug. The info I'm reading on the meds is sounding like something I would like to avoid if possible. My diet is pretty agressive right now, low carb, low fat, low calorie, and I exercise like a fiend,
So my question.......do you know of any links that may have some useful info?
Thanks!

Yes I am lurking around the ether net travelling out in space over the internet waves.  You have asked a very good question.  I don't know of any specific links but by using google you should be able to find links to naturopathic links.  There are sources of natural statins that don't exhibit the side effects of the chemically manufactured ones.  Zorcor is a good one and with a good diet and exercize will lower total cholesterol.  The Important thing is to have the ratio of HDL and total in the right range.  There is a med or element that will raise your HDL and that is niacin but it dilates your blood vessels and causes you to blush and fee hot for a little bit but there is a compound that reduces this called niaspan but always take before going to bed so you are sleeping if you get the blushing affect.  Exercise also helps in raising the HDL.  Reducing the intake of certain fats is also good but some fates like the omega 3 fatty acids are good and you can get these by eating cold water seafood like salmon and sardines & certain nuts like walnuts.  Carbohydrates are not the thing that causes plaque in the blood streams though can cause weight gain.  You need carbos for energy; protein for muscle building.  It is better to eat small and more meals/day instead of the standard 3/day.  Portion size is very important.  I take Lipitor but only every other day (10 mg)
There are studies being performed where the reported results indicate that cholesterol isn't the real culprit but inflamation.
You can subscribe (free) to WEBMD and they have a list of medical subjects and you will receive periodic articles over the internet.
I hope this rambling helps you discover what is best for you.
Trav

Mouse I know you were seeking out Traveler with this thread but let me clarify something here..To get your total number I need to add 248 and 176? If that is the case then you have whooper there and perhaps (at least for a while) makes sense to go on drugs. Also to consider .. is that a huge jump since lasts tests? Has it always tended to run high?

Mouse I wonder if you posted this on Main Board would Trav see this and perhaps other would see it as well that could help.

Thanks Trav. I lnew you's come up up with the wording I needed to Google. I tried every thing from diet and exercise to types of foods to avoid, didn't even think of naturopathic. Your rambling was insightful. I was aware of most everything that you mentioned. Didn't know about the blushing and hot feeling though, and I don't need more hot flashes!

Veets- The Docs office gave the results over the phone and the total number is the only one they didn't give me. He'll probably go over that one in his office. Is that what I do add the two? This cholesterol thing is new to me, and that's why I Googling like crazy. Information is power.
My last couple of blood tests show the numbers going up and then back down. This last one was a 20 point higher reading, and I think it's due to Breyers low carb ice cream! LOL
The test before that was 15 points lower than the previous one.
I can't say if it's hereditary,  no family to ask.
I've been on Protonix for my tummy (I was getting nauesous everytime I ate anything) since January and it makes me very hungry all of the time and I've been sneaking into the freezer. Bad Mouse!!
I'm hoping that on my visit next week the Doc will tell me I can stop that one.
You know how I am about taking meds. I rather not if there's a differant, natural way to take things in hand. So I'd like my Doc and I to give me another 3 months to see if I can bring it down on my own.
Thanks again!

Walnuts, EVOO & advocados would be much better than  any ice cream.  Sherbert is any good either.

I had my appointment with my Doc today.
He's giving me 3 months to see if I can get the numbers down.
If I can't I start taking statins.
EVOO and walnuts are now in the house. The ice cream is out.
I'm carefully reading the nutrition labels on food and keeping the good fat in- take to 300 grams a day or less.
I can do this!

And what was your total count. anyway?

hey if there is anyway the numbers will improve with dietary changes Mouse is the lady to take control and do it. So I know you will give it your best try and at the end of the 3 months if it is necessary to take a drug... you'll do it.

Mouse,

Your HDL, the good cholesterol, is incrediable HIGH and the ratio of HDL to LDL is also very good. The high HDL is probably caused by your great exercise program and being female helps. I don't know if so high HDL has any problems associated with it.

Please let us know how this issue is resolved.

Chuck
