Do you exercise before or after eating?

I've been doing my activities after meals and find that about half an hour later I'm hungry.

Today I exercised before dinner, and didn't do any walking after and I had one of lowest after dinner bs readings(81).

I think this one depends on the person and how they react!  I know I need some food in me before I start and I try to wait at least an hour before I go for a walk.

I walk for about 10 minutes before each meal. Was told that it was helpful with the cholesterol issue. And I do the rest of my exercising after my meals. :)

One morning my BG was 124 I got scared and went to my treadmill to walk for 30 minutes before breakfast.  Right after the exercise my BG was 134.  So, clearly my body produced glucose even that I did not eat anything.

Yesterday I decided to take my reading before and after exercise, the number dropped after exercise.  So for me it is better to exercise in the afternoon or evening but not in the morning.

If I exercise close to the meal time, I ate a handful of nuts and exercise.  This seems to work.

Mouse,

Very complicated question. The answer depends on activity and eating over the last few days, stress, etc.

I generally exercise before eating because exerecising after eating cause me indegestion.

I spend most of my time (when I'm not here, that is...) on the treadmill.  First I have my breakfast (a rice cake with low fat cream cheese and 2 cups de-caf coffee with soy milk).  Then I do 2 hours of walking.  Then lunch (more de-caf and either a salad or some low fat biscotti) and back on the treadmill for another 2 hours or so.  Sometimes I lift weights in the afternoon, after lunch.  But that is just me.  My sugars are unpredictable at best.  But I find that lifting weights can cause the sugars to go UP...which I think is puzzling.  I know it has something to do with the "stress" on the muscles, but still???  Walking make the sugars fall, but in no predictable way (at least not for me).  sheryl

Sheryl,

My experience is similar to yours, light walking gererally lowers BG levels, weight lifting or arobic walking will raise the readings about 20. Many reading surprise me although I can usually understand the readings about 60 % of the time.
