Use these simple tips to clean rings, earrings, necklaces and other gems.

* Use toothpaste to clean silver. Rub it on the jewelry and after 30 minutes, wash in water and dishwashing liquid. Rinse. Polish with cotton cloth.

* Gold or platinum can be cleaned with soaking in rubbing alcohol or vodka. If you don't want to waste the vodka, use denture cleaning tablets or dishwashing detergent. Soak 2 minutes, then rinse in.

* Stubborn dirt or grease can be removed with a toothbrush.

* Polish dry with a smooth, lint-free cloth.

* Mild soap can be used on pearls or porous gems like opals and emeralds. Remove dust with tissue, then dip in bowl of mild soap and warm water. Polish with cloth.

Thanks for the tips.  P.S. Be sure you don't clean your jewelry over an unstoppered sink!  Lots of people scrub the diamonds and other stones right out of their jewelry and down the drain.  They usually don't notice the missing stones until much later.  Always check  your jewelry cleaning solution or soapy water solution before dumping anything down the drain.
My father was a watchmaker and jeweler and I got to witness a lot of crying women over the years that came into his shop hoping that he could find another stone to match the quality and size of the ones they lost.
If you wear pearls, put them on AFTER spraying cologne, hair spray and etc.  Pearls are porous and can be permanently stained by sprays and even some makeup and skin care products!   Wipe your pearls with a soft cloth after wearing them to remove any  body oils or other damaging products.

Good tips, Adair  and good suggestions, Looneybird.
I reasd somewhere that soaking silver in a  pan with crumpled tinfoil (like Reynolds wrap).would also remove tarnish.  I don't have any silver to try it on.

Adair- as far as the 1st tip goes, No Problem! I'm always wearing my rings when I wash dishes. The necklaces are another story unless I plunge my head & neck in the sink LOL!
