Well Lee, there are a couple of ideas that spring to mind.

Yes, it's possible Maude could have been adopted by an uncle & aunt but adoption records would need to be found to confirm that theory.

On the other hand, it could be that Rebecca Jane was married twice.  She may have been, for example, Montgomery before she married a Livingstone and then if Mr Livingstone died, she then married Samuel Bell.  This could account for why you are finding both surnames cropping up.  It would be interesting to see if there is a birth record for Rebecca - do you have any idea of her year/country/area of birth?

Lastly, one question.  Where does Florance Bell come into it?  Was she an aunt? And if so, do you know who she married?

Don't know if the suggest above is of any help?

Hi Kay this is my daughter inlaws side of the family  now the only place a Florance shows up is on the birth cert for Maude but the story goes Samuel and Rebecca returned to Ireland so their daughter Florance could give birth as their daughter wasn't married they raised the child Maude as their own now the only child I can find born to Samuel & Rebecca is Lucy F born 1883 Sydney then there is no trace of these 3 until Maudes birth but can't work out why Maude would have her grandmother as mum and her real mum as dad on the cert on the marriage for Samuel and Rebecca it has Samuel was a widow and Rebecca was a spinster so don't think that's where the 2 different last names have come from so I'm confused thanks

It certainly does sound Lee as though someone along the lines hasn't wanted the "truth" to come out!  I can't help feeling there is a combination of factors here ensuring the true facts are covered up.  My guess is that indeed, Florance was Samuel & Rebecca's daughter, who gave birth to Maude out of wedlock and therefore Samuel & Rebecca appeared to raise her as their own child.

The certificate information, to me, sounds like some sort of error but at the risk of insulting our intelligence, and bearing in mind the odd handwriting in those days, are you quite happy the father is stated as "Florance"?

This certainly sounds like a mystery and the other thought that has crossed my mind (as I've found the same thing in my own family history) Maude was given her real mother's surname and possibly her real father will never be known.  As I say, I've found exactly the same in my own history and of course, that has presented a complete brickwall!

Well Lee, I do sympathise - it's so frustrating when a lack of information prevents you getting any further.  Of course, if I think of anything that may help I will naturally be glad to post it here for you.
