Hi thanks for letting me join your group, I am hoping that you can help me with my search for information on my maternal grandmother. I dont have a lot of information but here goes with what I know My mother Sheila Mary Breen Thompson was born in York 7/10/1932, on her birth certificate her parents are Mary Margaret Thompson nee Breen and William Henry Thompson. My mum told me her mum was from Ireland but didn't say where, I believe my Grandmother commited suicide when my mum was approx 4yrs old and I think that happened in Ireland. My grandfather was living in York in 1938 and remarried in 1940 also in York. My mother went to school in Ireland but I don't know any dates for this. My grandfather and his second wife moved to Ireland in the Gorey and Enniscorthy area, I did wonder if my grandmother came from the Gorey area and perhaps had family there ( maybe they helped with bringing up my Mum ). As my mum was an only child I have no family to ask . I wondered if you could direct me in the right direction as to how I could find any information. I have looked on the English BMD and can't find any record of a marriage or of my grandmothers death so presume these happened in Ireland. Thank Sue | |

I'm really not too happy about this one to be honest Sue. Basically unless your grandmother was approximately 55 when she had your mum, this one is rather unlikely. Sorry to have built your hopes up. What do you think? Kay Manager |

I agree it seems unlikely the age I think is too great and Antrim is in Northern Ireland and I think my family may of come from Southern Ireland I have to wait a week before I'll receive the marriage certificate>>>>> it's worse than waiting for Christmas to arrive Sue |

Ok Sue Well probably best I wait too now and do nothing until you let me know when you've received the certificate. If you can let me know more details then I'll see if I can track it further for you. Look forward to hearing again from you. Kay Manager |

Hi Kay I have the marriage certificate of Mary Breen to William Henry Thompson, The datails are They married 28th November 1925 at St Wilfrids catholic church Duncombe Place York. William was 31yrs and Mary 28yrs so her birthdate is around 1897. They were both Mental Nurses and living at the North Riding Mental hospital Clifton Yorks, Williams Father was also William Henry and was a confectioners labourer and Mary's father was call Michael Breen and was a farmer. I knew my grandfather was a mental nurse and my Mum was catholic so it seems I have the right certificate. Sue |

Hi Sue Thanks for letting me know about this. It's funny because only this morning I was on the point of putting a message here asking if it had come through but thought I'd just hang on to see if it arrived in the next post or two - these things take longer than you want don't they! So glad you've got some information here - it should help a bit. I will go and see if there's anything more forthcoming now, armed with what you've discovered. Check back to see if I've found any more. Kay Manager |

Hi Sue I was hoping to find some reference to Michael Breen and a marriage or perhaps his family, including your Mary. Alas nothing has been instantly forthcoming. So from there I decided to see what came up when I searched for births of Michael Breen. There are a good number I have to say. Thinking about your mention of Gorey I have found three possibles from around that area. There are two in Wexford and one in Wicklow between dates of 1872, 1875 and 1879 - thinking that perhaps Mary's father would be somewhere in his 20's when she was born. This is all guesswork and supposition of course. If you'd like me to provide the information, do please let me know and I'll gladly post it for you. Kay Manager |
