Hello

I am looking for any info on my great grandfather William John Bufton. I have been told that he was born in 1902 in Portsmouth. He lived in Isleworth when he was married to Honora Casey and had 3 children Marie, William and Shiela. No one seems to know what happened to William as he was declared missing in action in 1941 after not returning to his merchant navy ship docked in africa. I think his father was called George but I would like to know more about the Bufton line.

I have Just Checked Out The Birth Of William John and found his birth registration for you.This Will allow you to get a Birth Cert for him.With that you will Have his Parents

Not having overlooked the fact you believe William's father to be George, Mike has found the marriage of another William John Bufton in March 1901, Portsmouth to Ellen Elizabeth Dimmer (there are others listed on the record page for this marriage but having checked the 1901 census I see the other two individuals were man and wife, so by process of elimination I have found William John Bufton did indeed marry Ellen Elizabeth Dimmer).

Mike also found the marriage of a George Bufton but this was back in 1859 (31st January) to Frances Johnson. As Mike says, these could have been William John's parents (your William's grandparents). This could be proved by checking earlier census images.

I think I did get it wrong and apparently George was William's younger brother and their dad was William John also. I think William senior was married to a Helen.

Yes, as Mike said, I've had some computer troubles this week but I think all seems ok again now! I've been out this evening (gadding about!) but will certainly have another look into your Buftons tomorrow and get back to you with my findings.

Just been thinking Kate, you say you think William John (senior) was married to a Helen, well I've discovered on more than one occasion in the past censuses where Helen and Ellen were used for either name! On this basis I can't help feeling that the Ellen Elizabeth Dimmer above would be correct.

Having found the above information and because we don't yet have the benefit of the 1911 census (until 1 January 2012) there is only one way of finding out for sure, who William's parents were - but that will cost you money I'm afraid - obtaining the birth certificiate! Unfortunately the records available via the Internet don't always cover some of the areas we need to enable us to pinpoint some of the finer details.

Of course, if we had for sure William's parents you will be able to push back further.

Sorry I can't seem to help more for you on this one at this stage. Do feel free to ask for more help though, if you do obtain a certificate.
