Hi Managers, I'm looking for my birth mother who's name is Bisgrove Dorothy Maud. I have two addresses for her, In 1943 she lived at 18 Radford rd West Ho Plymouth. Before that I think she lived at 2 Centrel rd West Ho Plymouth. ( Born in 1924 Died 1948 ? ). Her father's name is Bisgrove Robert Henry ( dock lobourer ). That is the only Information i have on my mother and her family. As dad and I moved back to South Wales, I would really appreciate any help you can give me I have written to both addresses but no one has answered them.
Thanks.
Mike

Here are the birth records for the other children:

Births Jun 1883   (>99%)
Bisgrove  Ellen    East Stonehouse  5b 305

Births Jun 1887   (>99%)
BISGROVE  Edith    Plymouth  5b 267

Births Sep 1885   (>99%)
Bisgrove  Mary Jane    E. Stonehouse  5b 290

Births Jun 1893   (>99%)
Bisgrove  William Fred    Plymouth  5b 260

Births Jun 1896   (>99%)
Bisgrove  Lillie Eliza    Plymouth  5b 258

You will want to note that in the 1891 census the reference to Harry Bisgrove is actually your Robert Henry.  It's often discovered that some children were given "family" or "pet" names - this appears to be the case here.

I have deleted the last two messages Mike purely because the information I found proved to be incorrect for the 1871 census - alas I can't find your Bisgrove family on that census.  However, I've got them on the 1861 as follows:

William Bisgrove b 1821 Kingsbury, Somerset (Head) Agricultural Labourer
Jane Bisgrove b 1820 Kingsbury, Somerset (Wife) Glover of Leather
Edwin Bisgrove b 1850 Kingsbury, Somerset (Son) Agricultural Labourer
Anna Bisgrove b 1852 Kingsbury, Somerset (Daughter) Glover of Leather
Henry Bisgrove b 1855 Kingsbury, Somerset (Son)
Elizabeth Bisgrove b 1860 Kingsbury, Somerset (Daughter)

You will notice the  birth places are recorded as Kingsbury here but in later censuses Kingsley - I think there was a mistranscription later on.

The 1851 census is as follows:

William Bisgrove b 1821 Kingsbury, Somerset (Head) - Agricultural Labourer
Jane Bisgrove b 1820 Burrow, Somerset (Wife) - Glover
Edwin Bisgrove b 1850 Hurney, Somerset (Son)
Catharine Dimmock b 1835 Hurney, Somerset (Lodger) - Glover
Thomas Gillett b 1829 Burrow, Somerset (Lodger) - Labourer

As with the 1861 census the address is almost unreadable but it is in fact the same!  It appears to be "Thorney" or similar.  Sorry, not much help on that!

The 1841 census is very difficult to read.  The only entry for William Bisgrove born in 1821 is for an address giving only Chilton Polden, Somerset with three other individuals:

Maria Atwell age 20, Fanny Godwin age 15 and Elizabeth Watch age 20.

Usually I would have hoped to find William living with his parents, to give us another lead but this was not the case.  HOWEVER - I've found his birth record giving both parents - what a bit of luck, as follows:

William Bisgrove Pedigree
  Male

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
23 NOV 1823   Kingsbury Episcopi, Somerset, England
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  George Bisgrove Family
  Mother:  Ann Trott

Well Mike there's quite a bit of information here for you to read through.  I've discovered that George Bisgrove & Ann Trott had many other children.  Would you like the information on these individuals?  I have also found them on the 1841 census which again I'm happy to provide the info for.  I don't want to swamp you.

Perhaps you'll let me know if and when you'd like more on this family.

Regarding Henry Richards, Susan's father, I'm not finding anything - yet!  Don't give up hope.  From Susan's marriage certificiate can you tell me if there is an address for any of them or even the names of the witnesses?  Sometimes this can help a great deal.

I will await your response before I go any further but will be glad to persue any of the above.

Best wishes.

That's helpful Mike.  I'll see if I can find anything but one other thought I had - does it give Susan's age on the marriage certificate.  Not vitally important but may help a little.

Will plod on for you.

Hi Mike

I've been having another look to see if Susan is forthcoming for us!  Just re-reading our messages and am thinking - whilst we thought Susan's father was Henry Richards, from her marriage certificate am I correct that it's actually John Henry Richards we are after?

Hi again Mike

Well I don't know if we're on the right track, see what you think.  I'm working on the basis that if Susan was born 1891c her father would probably have been somewhere in his 20's, roughly.  On that basis I've searched for births of John Henry Richards in Devon between the years 1860 and 1880.  The one that jumps out at me is the following:

Births Dec 1873   (>99%)
Richards  John Henry P    Stoke D.  5b 335

This is mainly because Stoke Damerel is, apparently, rather close to Plymouth.  The others are located further afield in Devon.  Of course this would mean that John was only 18 at the time Susan was born.

There are quite a number of John Richards born in Devon, a couple of which are in Plymouth, but of course, there's no firm way of knowing which one is correct.

I will continue to see if I can find John on the 1901 census though.

Just one other thought I had, if Susan was 25 at the time of her marriage in 1916, she would have been born in 1891.  On that basis I've checked birth records and found the following:

Births Jun 1891   (>99%)
Richards  Susan Nellie J    Plympton  5b

228

What do you think?
