Hi there. I am looking for some help on the Broomfield surname. Mt grandfathers father came from England somewhere and we can't find any information on him or his family. His name was Abram William Broomfield.

Hi Susan

Thanks for this.  Can you tell me if your great grandfather lived all his life in Canada?  In other words was he born there?  And therefore was it his parents who emigrated from England perhaps at the end of the 1800's?  Would you happen to know names of any of his siblings?

My great grandfather came from England. My grandfather was born at Lester's Point, Labrador. I have no idea when they came here to Canada as we can't find out a whole lot of info on them.

Hi Marian

I have a picture of my great grandfather here I was going to put on the site. And I have a little bit more info here . I have this to add, William Broomfield from Eng, moved to Battle Harbour in 1795 and left Battle Harbour in 1811 and showed up in Tikeraulk, Labrador around 1812. Apparently my great grandfather's name was Thomas Abram Alfred Broomfield.

It seems that your William Broomfield went with John Broomfield (his brother?) to Canada with the company T. & D. Slade of Poole, Dorset.

Hi Marian

Karen Matheson is my sister. She lives in Ontario and I am in Alberta. We both have that info, that Broomfield that died on Christmas Day was our grandfather.

This Stanley at this address is my distant cousin. His father is related to my father somehow. His father's name was Samuel Broomfield with a sister Dulcie and Harriet I think.

Sue - a little snippet about Poole and the connection with Newfoundland from Wikipedia.

"Poole is a large English coastal town, Borough, port and tourist destination, situated on the shores of the English Channel, in the ceremonial county of Dorset. The town has a population of 141,128 and is part of the South East Dorset conurbation. Poole is famed for its large natural harbour, claimed to be the second largest in the world.

Maritime trade has a long history within the town, reaching its apex when the town was granted exclusive rights to fish off Newfoundland by Queen Victoria in the 19th century.[1]

During the Second World War the town was one of the central departing points for the D-Day landings of the Normandy Invasions.[2]"
