Hi People, this is my first posting at this site. I use similar Australian sites for research.
I'm on the West Coast of Australia and far away from just about everything.
I have been having difficulty chasing my father's family.
I have the following.....

John Baker born Ewhurst 1728
Death unknown
Married Frances Milham 23 - 04 - 1753
Frances born 1731 Ewhurst
I have Children for John and Frances, I am descendant of son George.

John's parents I'm told were James Baker and Susanne (nee unknown)
Sorry I cant help with births, Deaths, Marriages etc. All I know is that James was from Ewhurst too.
I would really appreciate some help filling some gaps with particulars of both John and James.

Well how STUPID of me Allan and my apologies for this wildly incorrect information.  Having done a search for marriages of James & Susanne/Susannah/etc I saw the ...27 in connection with the ...29 and Ewhurst and jumped (rather heavily) to completely the wrong conclusion.  I'm very sorry about that and will now have to admit I've learnt a valuable lesson, the hard way.

Back to the drawing board - I will have another, proper, look for you and see if anything else comes forward.

I have a lot of information about the Baker Family in Australia.

The information I have been having trouble with is as per my initial posting of James and Sussanne.
What you see is what you get ---- I have nothing else. Nor do I know any of James' ancestors.

Apparently George and Charlotte's trip to Australia was funded by the local Parish, I can find no Parish records re funding
The son Allan who died onboard the Ship. Apparently documentation exists in the ship's doctor's log, I have been unable to trace copies of this.

I think to try and go back any further is asking too much. What I am asking for her will complete a comprehensive history of the Baker family.
This is nowhere near as exciting as my mother's bloodline, she is descendant of Edward the 1st. and my wife is American, she has 3 U.S. Presidents in her bloodline. Her mother is a Cleveland, descendant of Grover Cleveland. Kind of makes my Bakers insignificant doesnt it.

Hello Allan

As Marian said, my computer has been out of action for the last week but it's now up and running again!  I will have a look at the information you've posted and see if I can find anything for you.  Do check back soon to see if I've had any luck.

Hello again Allan

Just to let you know I've not forgotten you!  I've been searching for these Bakers in Ewhurst but at the moment I'm coming up with exactly the same information you already have on siblings etc.  I'm drawing a blank all round on John's parents James & Susanne.  Incidentally, and without wishing to appear that I'm doubting your intelligence, are you quite happy that John's parents were indeed James & Susanne?  I only ask as I have found evidence of a John Baker born 1729c Ewhurst with parents Thomas & Elizabeth - I'm just curious to know if maybe you have some information which isn't quite right.  Forgive me if I've got that wrong but thought it worth mentioning to you.

Do your Thomas and Elizabeth have the 5 children listed under their names?
This information was given to me by the Millham family who married into the Baker family on more than one occassion.
I'm seeing a notice saying that MSN Groups will be moved to "Multiply". Is this happening or is it spam???
and in closing, would you have any idea where I might get old pics of Ewhurst to add to my family history research.
Once again, no rush, just when ever it happens will be fine.

Hello again Allan

I will certainly check the children of this couple and report back here to you.

Alas, MSN apparently are closing and that isn't spam but hopefully we will be able to transfer, so don't worry.  We will keep you posted but in the meantime check back here as usual for anything I've managed to find.

Likewise I'll see if I can find anything on photographs of Ewhurst for you.

The Australian Surname Group are moving to Yuku websites if you were wondering what was happening down here.
The Victorian state group has almalgamated with the australian group, other stae groups may do the same making it one bigger site for all.

Hello Alan

Well, yes there are children listed for Thomas Baker & Elizabeth (no maiden name though which is drawback) but I really don't think they are the children you are looking for, plus there are actually seven listed in Ewhurst - Betty, Mary, Joseph, Sarah, John, Jenny and Ann.  I feel perhaps this is not the line you are looking for but felt it was certainly worth mentioning to you earlier.

Regarding photographs of Ewhurst have a look at the following two links:

This shows the church (today) and also:

This shows an old windmill at Ewhurst.

I can't find anything with old photographs of the village though but will keep looking and if anything crops up, will of course post for you.

Hope the above is of interest!

The photos on this one may not be as old as you're looking for Allan, but are certainly very interesting.  Scroll down and click each heading for the photo to open:

thank you for the web addresses. I didnt worry about the Surrey ones as our interest is in Sussex.
I'm not 100% certain but the church one  just might be the family church. It is of the era and I cant find others so I think you have done well this time.

Thank you

Very welcome Allan.  I only mention this due to my own experience - don't totally discount the Surrey element - I have found Ewhurst is right on the Sussex/Surrey boundary and in fact my 2008 road atlas shows it listed under Surrey.  Just thought it was worth mentioning this to you - you never know if you might miss some small detail that could make all the difference!
