Does anyone on this site know anything about a church in East Sussex, England called St. Johns Sub Castro, Lewes, Sussex?

Info needed on the original church NOT the 2nd one opened in 1851

I have no idea what sub castro means and it might be Latin.

Any help very much appreciated

Liz

Hi Liz

If you do a "Google" search on "sub castro" there are lots of sites relating to the church you're looking for - might be worth looking.

Kay,  I have already done a Google search but can only find info on the St. Johns church which was built c. 1851.  The one I was looking for was built on the site much earlier & that is the one I was after.  Cannot find anything on the first one and was hoping that someone may know something about it

Ok Liz, thought it worth a mention as so many came up!  If I can think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Thanks Kay,  I think this one is going to prove a little difficult to get info as it is so old

This church is mentioned quite a few times on a posting for an Aaron DAW who was born c. 1748 in Sussex and that is why I am trying to find more info as he was an ancestor who we know previous little about except for his marriage & children & his death
He married in the church of St. Peter and St Paul and I have info on that and even a photo and believe it is still used as a church in Peasmarsh, Sussex.
This England history is fantastic and very interesting when you go into it

Hi Liz

I just asked my brother, who is brilliant at Latin.

Sub-castro means literally "underneath the castle".  He says that in this case it may actually mean "near the castle".

Hope this helps.

Marian,  Many thanks for this explanation.  I have only just come across your reply.
I had tagged my original message so I would receive replies in my inbox but didn't get this one
Am I putting my messages into the wrong place?  Just wondering why they have been moved
Sorry but this site is set up a little differently from all the MSN genealogy sites I belong to and not quite used to the set up.
I originally posted it on the general board.
Please let me know if I am posting in the wrong place

Thank you brother for helping with his latin knowledge. Never studied it myself.
When I was a child our school song was all in latin but I have no idea why as no-one knew what on earth any of it meant!  Rather pointless I think to sing your little heart out and have no idea what you are saying?

Hi Liz

You are welcome, and I was happy to be able to help.

What happened was that I moved your message on to the "Queries" board.  We try to keep the site as tidy as we can so as to make it easier for everyone to locate messages, and especially names.  That is why we always put surnames first in capitals, followed by the Christian name(s).

Thank you for your continued interest in our site, and may we wish you well with yours.

Best wishes

Thanks Marian,  I will try and remember to put any lookups in future on the queries board

My sites are arranged completely differently so you will have to forgive me if I get mixed up as I am used to my sites

I think this site is fantastic and have recommended it to quite a few people this week on my sites

Hi again Liz

Just to clarify, surname search queries should of course be posted on the relevant Surname initial board.

The Queries board is for miscellaneous queries such as your question about the church.

Thank you for your kind remarks about our site.

Marian,  Yes I realised after I had posted that I should have mentioned that I understood about surname postings
It was just the queries that I had posted on the wrong board as our boards post queries on general or lookup boards & I have got used to that
Hopefully I will remember the queries board next time to save you some work

We have quite a few members talking about your wonderful site lately so I really mean what I said about this site
