Sorry to bother you at this late stage (I'm also adding this to our new site) A friend asked me for help so here I am asking the group - She approached a site in Australia and was told that it would have to pay a few hundreds of (Australian) dollars and then they could not guarantee any results because of poor record keeping back at that time etc.  She is looking for her gggrandfather who was born in 1809 in Co. Cavan.  His name was John James Devanny who migrated to South Australia in 1840.  He was a labourer but on his marriage, which took place in Adelaide. He changed his surname to Mc Avaney; his fathers name according to family stories. This was never recorded and his mother could not write so she signed with an X

I wonder if any of our Australian friends might be able to help.

Cait

Here is what I have found to date. No mention of what grandmother's name so still might be climbing the wrong tree here.
I haven't checked for births for Devanny but no doubt I will find some.

If person is interested they might try rootsweb for email lists that are related to South Australia or even the surnames in Australia.
