The families I am searching for are the HARRINGTONS.  Dennis born about 1815/1821 (varies census to census!), his wife Julia born about the same time and their (known) children Cornelius, born c.1845 Margaret
born c.1851  Catherine born c.1857  Mary born c.1856  Hannah (known as Ann) born 1842.They came from the BANTRY BAY area of CORK Southern Ireland probably around 1857/58 as all the children are shown as being born in Ireland. They settled in STOURBRIDGE WEST MIDLANDS.

There is another Harrington living within the family unit at 1861( which is the first census on which they appear )called Michael born c.1836; he has a wife called Margaret born c.1834 and a son called Michael aged 16 months. He is shown as "lodger" but I think this was probably because he was only there until they had found their own accomadation-------- which they had by the next census( although they were still living in the Stourbridge area.) I believe this man to be another son of Dennis and Julia.

The other family I am interested in is the DONAHUES and in particular Patrick born c. 1830 who married Hannah Harrington in the Catholic chapel in Stourbridge in 1860.He came from GALWAY( maybe about the mid 50's as 1861 is the first census he appears on.)

As regards his surname I am a little concerned that the spelling that was adopted by later generations using the U might not be correct because the marriage certificate shows Patrick could write (although he was the only one at the ceremony who could!!) and he spelt his name DONAHOE.

There is a family "legend" that at least 3  children  of the above families emigrated to America probably in the 1880's( and several do disappear off the radar! although I haven't found anything conclusive as yet) The only other story concerning this was that one of these people was (supposedly) killed on a railway line and another (supposedly) married into the DOAN family (they of the back ache pills.)Depending on your age that is either going to ring a bell or cause a blank look!
Years ago these pills were very popular and I believe sold world wide.  The company does not exist today but as been swallowed up (if you'll excuse the pun!!!!) by one of the pharmacutical giants.

Obviously I would be interested to see whether there is any truth in those rumours but I have put details on the message board at Ancestry U.K. and had no response.

My main objective is to trace the families Irish roots and I hope you will be able to assist me in this quest.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Chris. Have just read your message.  When you say you are looking the Harringtons from Bantry Bay, do you know the Parish, or Town they came from?
I have Harrington's in my tree from Berehaven, which is in the Bantry Bay area. My Harringtons are Harrington (Causkey) & (Caupey).
If I can be of any help let me know
Sheila

Hi Sheila Chrissy is having Problems trying to get hold of you.She has asked me if  i can leave this message for you

Mike

Hello Sheila,

Thank you for replying to my message on English/Irish requesting info on the Harringtons/Donahues who are relatives on my mother's side of the family.

Unfortunately I know very little about them as both my mother's parents, James King and Julia Donahue had died long before I was born (1948) and all my mother seemed to know was that the Harringtons were originally from Bantry Bay and her grandfather, Patrick Donahue was from Galway.

My mom never even told me the story of the three Donahues who went to America (although I've only been able to account for two so far)
This I heard from her older sister when I was in my twenties.

The only things I have managed to find since placing my message is that the Michael Harrington who was lodging with Dennis and Julia at the 1861 census and whom I initially thought was a son looks to have been Dennis' younger brother.
I believe this as at the time of Michael's second marriage to Margaret Warren in the Catholic church in Stourbrige his father is listed as Cornelius Harrington

As Dennis' oldest (known) child was also called Cornelius I have assumed(rightly or wrongly!) that they were therefore brothers.

I have also found that Julia Harrington, Dennis' wife was a COUGHLIN before her marriage.

Patrick Harrington, whom I believe was another brother of Dennis was also married to a Catherine Coughlin, so it seems that their wives, if not sisters were related to each other before marriage.

I have found out a lot more about their later lives thanks to census records but I must admit that trying to trace their earlier lives has proved to daunting to contemplate!!

I care for a disabled friend who also has Irish ancestry and I have tried to help her unravel her " Irish roots " and to be honest I think it's too mind boggling!!!!

Mind you one thing we did find funny when she was looking through some baptisms she came across a child that looked like it was called "NAPPY FARTY" -----------What that was all about I don't know!!!!!!!

Anyway, I'm sorry I can not help any further but should that ring any bells with you, I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Chris.
