Hi,
I'm trying to trace my GG Grandparents, Terence HORAN and Ellen DEEGAN. I have some information on them that came from the shipping records when they emigrated to Australia.
Terence's parents were Timothy and Rose. Timothy was recorded as a publican in Roscrea, Tipperary. Ellen's parents were Thomas (a servant) and Anne.
Terence was born around 1812, probably in Tipperary, and Ellen was born around 1818 - no idea where. They married in Dublin before coming to Australia with a 7 month old son, Thomas in 1840.
Yesterday I bought baptism records through IFHF for probable brothers for Terence - twins Timothy and Michael born 1813 in Newport Parish, Tipp, parents Timothy HORAN and Rose MAHER. I feel pretty sure that they were Terence's brothers, although neither Timothy or Michael reappear as children's names. I couldn't find a Terence in the records.
I'd like to find out more Timothy and Rose and any other children. Also about Ellen DEEGAN and her family.
Cheers Robyn Horan Sydney

Hi Robyn This is Kay and I will try and help you search for your ancestors. I think, looking at what you already have, it's going to be a tricky one!!! Irish ancestors are never that easy to trace but of course, you have to start somewhere. I've had an initial look at a potential birth for Ellen Deegan and found the following birth record: Church Baptism Deighan Ellen 1818 Co. Limerick The spelling of Ellen's surname is different but this happens very often - over the years and transcriptions spellings change or become altered. Based upon the year of birth I feel this is quite a likely match, what do you think? Kay Manager |

Hi Kay,
Thanks for replying. That's a new spelling! I've tried Duigan, Dugan and Duggan but not that. I'll look into it tonight. Cheers Robyn |

Hello again Robyn Another of our managers, Marian, as spotted your Horan message on one of the other genealogy websites and forwarded me the information in the hope of helping you further. Well, having now discovered that Ellen's parents were Thomas Deegan & Anne I ran a search for other children of this couple, in the hope it might point us in the right direction, but alas no other children for the Tipperary area or years surrounding Ellen's birth were apparent. I'm rather disappointed as I was hoping maybe a sibling's details may lead us further back with Thomas & Anne. Back to the drawing board! Kay Manager |

Hi Kay,
Yes, I don't feel confident of finding the Deegans, but you never know. I will keep trying.
About the twin brothers that I mentioned earlier Timothy and Michael Horan, born 1813 in Newport Parish, Tipp - I got the baptismal record on-line from the IFHF and it showed father Timothy Horan and mother Rose Maher. I was pretty excited when I found those twins - a MIchael Horan witnessed my Terence and Ellen's wedding. The sponsors were Bgt Dwyer and Will Magher. I will assume that Maher and Magher are the same family.
Do you think that any more information would be available from the parish records? Should I contact the parish priest? I haven't had much experience with contacting sources in Ireland but I've been watching every one else's successes on this site.
Cheers Robyn |

Hello Robyn Don't get demoralised! I am in the same boat as you with one of my great-great-grandfathers - he came from Ireland but after 5 or 6 years I'm still looking for him. Don't give up hope though. Yes it could be a good idea to write to the Parish Priest and ask if there are any records relating to your ancestors. They don't always answer I'm afraid - I get the feeling they like to keep things close to their chest! However I feel it's worthwhile - it's all part of the searching process. Again yes, I would say Maher and Magher are the same family. It never fails to amaze me how names alter over the years - not to mention mistranscribed. Anyway, do let me know how you get on if you decide to contact the Parish Priest around the relavant area(s). Kay Manager |

Thanks Kay,
And thanks to the wonderful world of Google I found the email address of the parish priest at Newport on the CoTipperary Rootsweb mailing list.
According to the list he is very helpful - is it OK to just contact the priest and ask him to check out the records? It seems like an imposition.
Cheers Robyn |

Hello again Robyn No I don't think it's an imposition - phrase your letter or email polite and with courtesy and I'm sure no-one would take offence. You're always polite on here so I can't imagine anyone would feel you were imposing. At the end of the day he can choose to say no or just ignore your letter (which I'm afraid has happened to me before) but then I think it's always worth a go! Let me know how you get on. Hi Kay,
I've had a response already from Father Joe Delaney at Newport Parish.
He couldn't find a baptism record for Terence nor could he find a marriage record for his parents, Timothy and Rose. However, gave me some details on a baptism record (that I now don't need to buy) and he made a very good suggestion - that they probably married at Roscrea as Maher was a name commonly found there, while it was not found at Newport, and that marriages usually took place in the bride's parish.
So, Terence may have been born in Roscrea after all, and they moved to Newport where the twins were born and then a year or so later moved back to Roscrea where at least two other children were born.
So it has been a good week - I've found a set of older twin brothers, two younger brothers and a possible younger sister - none of whom I knew about 4 days ago. And the twins are the only set of twins I can find throughout either my father's or mother's families going back a long long way.
Also getting the names of the sponsors and Rose's surname from the records has been a complete revelation. I can now see that the boat that Terence came out on in 1840 also carried friends and possible cousins.
Now, if I can just find a parish priest at Roscrea as helpful as Father Delaney!
Cheers Robyn |
