I made a small breakthrough with the brick wall for my Hickey side
last night.  The only thing I had to go on for my grandfather (James Hickey)
is his 1935 death certificate (says father is Patrick Hickey and mother's
first name only "Anne"), one 1920 US census record, and my father telling me
that grandma said that grandpa came from County Cork.  Last night I found
his World War I draft registration form.  It shows him as James Joseph
Hickey born 01 Sep 1873.

James Hickey: 5th Apr 1900.. S. S. Oceanic

Age 23... lab. Irish.. Killalos(best reading) arrived NY paid ..self.. Brother Patrick ..203 16th st. Jersey City

Unknown if this is the same James.. but of interest.. since the brother of Bridget, Mortimer, lived in Jersey City
Father of James was named Patrick..

James living in the same district as the McGrath family in
1910 census. I've looked at some other writing on ship manifests and Hickey.
looks like STICKEY . It is the way the H is formed.

Following appears to be the same James that arrived on the "Oceanic"

Tom has been unable to locate a marriage certificate in New Jersey either through Church or Civil resources.

There were only three James Hickey's listed on the Groom Index for New York City
There were not any matches.
But one was of interest because of the WALSH family connected with the Carrig Family

JOHN J. QUINN married a MARTHA HICKEY born in Emily, Ontario, Canada. There
were Walsh's there too. Wonder if there is a connection

Hi Tom..

The following message came through on the Queens NY Message Board this evening.

The entire 1.6 million name Manhattan Brides index from 1866 to 1937 is now on line on both the IGG and GGG web sites.

By putting the Bride's name Delia CARRIGG I was able to find the marriage.
But .. this is why I couldn't find it in the previous Groom search, they have him as JOHN and not James.

They would be celebrated the 94th anniversary of their marriage this coming Friday..
Married: 27 Apr. 1913...Manhattan NY

Cheers
jelora

I found a Johanna HICKEY age 32 and a widow sailed from Mallow, Cork co. to Canada(Peterborough township 1825. She had 6 children with her.: James Hickey(16), Patrick(15), Mary(13),Thomas(11), and Michael(7)and John(18). James Hickey married Jane O'Donnell, Patrick m. Margaret Sliney, Mary m. Thomas Flaherty and Thomas m. Elizabeth Lynch. James is related to my Quinn's. I found this on the message board.

I looked John and James up in the LDS site and it shows both having the same birth date and parents:  29 Aug 1875  Patrick Hickey and Anne Deegan

Perhaps they are twins.

In response 11, I speculated that James and John could have been twins.  The fact that another John was born to the same parents on 2 Apr 1878 could indicate that the first John born on 29 Aug 1875 had died; the next son born after this John's death could have been named John as doing so was a fairly common custom.

Hi Mike:  Lets assume that the James Hickey shown in the LDS site as being born on 29 Aug 1875 in County Carlow is my grandfather.  What would I learn from viewing the associated microfilm at the local LDS Family History Center?  Would it point me to a record that I could order, a parish, or townland?

I've been dabbling in this research since 1999 but as you can see I am still quite a novice.  What would you recommend as a follow-up action on my part?

By the way, I am quite certain that I would have never found the marriage record on my own.  You guys are great!

Thanks,

Tom

Thank you Tom,Now Looking at the film Will tell you Hopefully the parish,You can Either write to the priest. To see if you can Obtain a Cert.Or contact the Gro.And ask them to Run a search For you.Letting them Know you want to Obtain a Certificate.Because of the dates the Gro Should have them. There is a link onsite to Gro I think they Charge 11 Euro.Plus if they run a search a few extra Euros.
But would save you a bit of time.I sent off for one Last year,And found them very Helpfull
