My 4xgrandfather CHARLES McGUIRE was born abt 1802 in Ireland. His father was THOMAS McGUIRE from Ireland. Thomas went to England and I think worked as a Miller in Travellen, Derbyshire. I don't know who he married or how many children they had, but would love to know. Charles McGuire married in 23 October 1937 in Duffield to Elizabeth Sewells. I have only the date of their eldest son Thomas's birth, 8/12/1838, the other 5 children I can not find. I would love any information on this family please. Thomas, his wife, and any children they had, as well as birth dates of Charles and Elizabeth's children.
Thank you all again
Lorraine Cole

Hello again Lorraine

One small thing I should have mentioned sooner - when you want to answer a message on the surname message boards, you don't need to open a brand new message (and heading) every time.  It's easier than that!  You'll see in the top left hand corner of any message a little icon saying "reply" in a pinky/mauve box - just click on this and a reply window will open.  Type your message in this new window and when you've finished click (at the bottom of this window) "send message".  It saves a lot of fiddling around for the managers and is a much quicker and simpler way of sending your message to us.

Hope I've explained this clearly.

Anyway, do check back later on as I think I may have found something interesting for you on the 1851 census - I'm going to double check the details and post for you here later on.

Hello again Lorraine

Now, bear in mind that over the years names and spellings alter.  Transcriptions are not 100% accurate and therefore we find we are looking for alternative presentations of these names.

Having found, what I believe to be the correct family on the 1851 census, I've now managed to locate them on the 1841.  I will list below firstly what I've found on the 1841 and then on the 1851 censuses.

Firstly, however, I managed to find the marriage record for Elizabeth and Charles and this shows Elizabeth's father was James.  In case you don't have this information yourself, here it is:

ELIZABETH SEWELLS Pedigree
  Female   Family

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  JAMES SEWELLS Family

Marriages:
  Spouse:  CHARLES MCGUIRE Family
  Marriage:
23 OCT 1837   Duffield, Derby, England

Now see below for the other information I have.

Here is what I have found for the 1841 census - note the variation on spelling and also the birth years can vary up to 5 years:

Charles MacGuire - Head - b: 1806 Ireland - Clothes dealer
Elizabeth MacGuire - Wife - b: 1820 Derby
Peter MacGuire - Son - b: 1830 Scotland
James MacGuire - Son - b: 1840 Derby
Roseanne MacGuire - Daughter - b: 1839 Derby

It is possible that Charles didn't follow in his father footsteps to become a miller, but chose another occupation.  What do you think?

If you feel the above could be correct, here is the information I have for the 1851 census:

Charles Mc Guire - Head - b: 1803 Munster, Ireland - Clothes Dealer
Elizabeth Mc Guire - Wife - b: 1815 Lincolnshire
James Mc Guire - Son - b: - Bootbinder
Thomas Mc Guire - Son - b: 1839 Derby
Rowan Mc Guire - Son - b: 1841 Derby
George Mc Guire - Son - b: 1843 Derby
Herbert Mc Guire - Son - 1847 Derby
Charles Mc Guire -Son - 1850 Derby

Also residing with the family is Richard Levell b: 1813 Lincolnshire and listed as Visitor.

Now, you will notice mention of Rowan Mc Guire - Son.  The image is unclear but I'm wondering, due to the birth year, if perhaps somehow this has been mistranscribed and should be Roseanne from the earlier, 1841 census.  I'm not certain really because she was listed as daughter then, but son in the 1851.  She could have died and another child subsequently born - not impossible.  If I find a death record for her I will let you know.

Also, Peter is missing.  This could be that he is residing elsewhere, but likewise, if I find him I will let you know.

I can't help feeling Peter must have been mistranscribed somewhere on the 1851 census because he isn't showing up at all, that I can find.  It's quite likely he was recorded with a different name spelling or even birth place/year - unfortunately this does happen and makes tracing ancestors very difficult.  Sorry I've not had more success for you.
