Joseph B Allen, 33 years, travelling salesman, born in Hillingdon, Middlesex
married to Louisa H Holmer, 27 years, born in Southwark, Surrey
Living at 2 Loughborough Rd, Lambeth. Children: Marion 6, William 4, George 1.
1861 English Census
Louisa H Allen, 38, lived at No. 5 Stockwell Rd, Lambeth, head of family, classed as Fund holder. Children in household: Marian L. 16, William C. 14, George 11, John B. 8, Walter P. Also Charles Holmes (?Holmer) 44, in residence (her brother) also classed as Fund holder. We have an unidentified ref. to 64 Barrington Rd, which is a side street to Loughborough Rd.
Presumably Fund holder equates to ‘private means�? No sign of Joseph B. Allen , who presumably died between 1853 and 1861.
Louisa Henrietta Allen nee Holmer born September 1821, died in 3rd quarter of 1887 at Lambeth, aged 66.
She must have understated her age to the census takers in 1851 and 1861. Her parents�?names were William and Margaret Holmer.
1871 English Census
In the military John Birnie Allen, 18, was a bombardier in the artillery.
So, John Birnie Allen married Ethel Tronier in 1899, having had previous marriage with Edith Waller, 3 surviving children, in Singapore or thereabouts while a policeman. He migrated to Australia after the death of his first wife Edith, leaving a grown up family in Singapore, the son later migrating to California.
John Birnie Allen was born in 1853 and died 1931, aged 78.

Any clues about the significance of the name Birnie (a Scottish surname) �?it might have been the maiden name of Louisa Holmer’s mother, Margaret. Margaret’s maiden name?
