Susan,I know this is odd,But i Found A marriage of a John Cotter To a Mary Foley.Ok it May just be coincidence. It was in 1858 In Boston.I dont know what year William and Ellen Married.I know Ellen was born in 1831.I will add it anyway.Just in Case. But this is the only Record i can Find Of A John Cotter Married to a Mary Foley.Could it be possible that John Was not the Father but a Brother.Who Attended the Marriage Of Ellen

Mike this is an interesting one!!  I sent a copy of the marriage of Chichester and Ellen to Marian very difficult to translate !   But Chichester and Ellen has two children born in Quebec Mary Ann 1858 and Richard Chedester in 1859 not Boston.
I have printed this info off Mike as it is possible these people moved around !!
Thank you very much.
Susan.

Thanks Mike Richard is my Great Grandfather they lived at Temple Street, Newport, the house they lodged in is still there!! Ellen their mother had died and Chichester was in the Asylum! Their three sisters moved up north.  I can't find any of them  in the 1871 census, many other's are there that came from Morwenstow and Kilkhampton it was at this time that some went to Australia hence cousins Diane and Tamara !!  Lucky lot !!

Susan What I can Make out of The marriage lines Is It reads Is just a Small transcription That This was to Solemnise The Marriage of William Chichester Found Son Of Richard Found And The definitive Mary Fry[Wife].toEllen COTTER Female. The next Section Reads slightly Different In the presence or absence of John Cotter and Mary Foley. It then goes on a bit more about The rites of Marriage And Then it was signed in the presence of James Tobin And Mary ONeil. The last bit is just where they signed.I could be wrong On the John cotter and Mary foley bit

Thank you Mike I used the Google search engine and found a site that will interpret words from English to French and visa-vera and came up with about the same his parents were deceased so I took the meaning as that, but no address or occupation !! But still they gave me the wrong first name of Ellen by e-mail  so it was well worth the $4-50 + 78p postage !!!
I haven't heard from Ruth but which ever way it goes I will let you know what she say's  as I think we all like to know the ending of some thing.
Thank you Mike.
Susan.

Hi Mike thank you for your lovely comments, I have not heard from Ruth since she first offered help I think off the top of her head she knew of 13 different Cotter Families !!!That was with out anyone doing a search!
I did read the name Cotter came from Cottier Workers in and around Cork don't know how true this is, I was also told it is a possibility that the name Foley came from Co. Kerry!!

I will get in touch if I or Ruth find a conclusion. thank you for all your help.
Susan.
