I have been able to trace the Clarkson side of my family back to my Grandfather Lawrence who was born in 1886 in Preston Lancashire England. Census records indicate that his father, my Great, Great Grandfather Robert Clarkson was also born in Preston sometime during the 1850"s. Could you help me trace Robert and further if possible. I am hoping to make a trip to meet my family members once I am able to locate them.

Thanks Jim

Hi again Jim

Well the difficulty I'm finding is that, despite thinking there wouldn't be too many Margaret and Mary Alice Clarksons listed, there are actually quite a number and certainly in the Preston and surrounding areas.  Of course it could be any one of these entries that are correct and therefore without going to the expense of purchasing relevant marriage certificates it's almost impossible to pinpoint which one may be correct.  The only other thing I can suggest is if you can think of any names within your family working from the present day, backwards, it might be possible to trace back down the line to see if there's an obvious marriage between Clarkson and any surnames you may be aware of.  That way we could find the births of children (perhaps cousins and so on you have) and this would give us the Clarkson maiden name alongside the child's surname, ie the father's surname which could tie in with a marriage.

As I say, I naively thought it would be easier than it has been to find Margaret and Mary Alice Clarkson.

Please do let me know if you can conjure any surnames that you can and I will look further, gladly.

Hi Kay,

I have found the following information regarding a possible living relative.

Alice Clarkson born 27 May 1916 in Wray Lancashire
( John4, Robert3, John2, <Robert1 born 05 Sept 1779 Tatham Lancashire>)
She married Henry Cragg b 09 Jun 1916 in Workington, Cumbria.

Child of Alice Clarkson and Henry Cragg is: Henry Victor Cragg b 1946 Lancaster, Lancashire and married Pauline Canon 05 Oct 1974 in Lancaster, Lancashire.

Are you able to research this in order to determine if there are other living relatives.

Thanks Jim

Hello again Jim

I've managed to find Henry & Pauline Cragg apparently still living with their two children!!

Due to the sensitive nature of the information I have, are you happy for me to email the details to you directly, rather than post them on site?  I feel it's best to respect their privacy.  Are you happy with this?  If so I will certainly provide the information I've found.

Perhaps you'll let me know via this message board and I'll take it from there.

Many thanks.

I'm finding there are numerous John Clarksons listed in the census images but none of them are showing as having been born in 1789 in Tatham.  I'm just wondering Jim if you have any information on what John's occupation was.  How have you discovered his year and place of birth - a certificate of some sort?  If so, does it give an occupation for him - a marriage certificate should.  Any other snippets you have may just point us in the right direction.

I've found Tatham is a little hamlet just south of Kirby Lonsdale, whilst a John Clarkson I have located born in 1789 was born in Poulton le Fylde but this is just north of Blackpool - too far from Tatham I feel to be the same John.

Perhaps you'd get back to me on this one and it might give another pointer for me.

Many thanks.

Hi Kay

I have decides not to pursue John Clarkson at this point.

I have thourghly researched the CLarkson end of my family to this point owing  to your most helpful and excellent research.

I am now interested in pursuing the history of my Great Grandmother Annie Prosser. She was married to my Great Grandfather Robert Clarkson born 1858 in Preston Lancashire.

Research to date on my part indicates that Annie Prosser was born about 1863 in Blaenavon, Monmouth, Wales. The England census record of 1891 indicate that she was living in Preston Lancashire. It further indicates that a Margaret Davis, Mother of Annie Prosser was living with her at the time. I am assuming that the mother had remarried a Davis.

Would you kindly do your magic and provide me with any info regarding Annie Prosser

Thanks Jim

Hello Kay

I am searching my mother's ( Margaret Marie Elizabeth Convery) side of the family and have reached an impass at my Great Grandfather Hugh Convery who was born in Ireland about 1849. His wife's name was Martha (maiden name unknown) and she was also born in Ireland in 1854.

I have found the following info on Hugh Convery. He lived and worked in the Port Glasgow area in the shipyards. He had the following children, MaryJane b: 1879, John b: 1881, Emma b: 1882, James ( my grandfather) b: 1887, Agnes b: 1889 and Hugh b: 1890. All his children were born in Scotland.

I am hoping you can assist me in finding Hugh Convery's ancesters.

Thanks

Jim Clarkson
