Hi, I'm really sorry about posting over christmas, completely forgot cos my Mum and I were talking about the name. Anyway, my Mum is originally from Lancaster, I was trying to figure out where the name originally comes from because we've always believed that it was norwegian but as you've found also, it looks like it may have come up through the turkish instrument. Anyways, sorry again and thanks! |

Clare I found This little bit of Info for you Mike The name cümbüs is the Turkish version of the Persian word "jombesh," meaning movement, catalytic activity, or just plain fun. It was in this last sense that the instrument was named and the word was taken as the family's surname in 1934 when all Turkish citizens were required to take fixed, inheritable last names. |
