I have been researching Jermiah Carroll for five years. He is my maternal great grandfather. Jeremiah was born in New York in 1854, I have looked at the census and can not find him in New York. He died in 1894 at the age of 40 yrs in Chicago, Illinois(Cook co. ) He married Elizabeth Meehan from Cobourg, Ontario, Canada and had 4 children there. Mary, John, Thomas and Francis. They then moved to Chicago. Steven was born, James, Edward Arthur, Jeremiah 1880, Elizabeth(my grandmother)1891 and Catherine. I sent for his death cert. and all it said that parents were born in Ireland and he was born in NY. A Lot of my relatives were in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada and I think that he must have met his wife there. If you can be of any help, I would appreciate it. WHERE IN NEW YORK? I CAN'T FIND OUT! How frustrating. There were other relatives in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess co. NY. James Carroll and Ann Elizabeth, James owned a meat market on Jefferson st. there. I don't know what the relationship was, but James was born in Louth, Ireland in 1832-1834.
I have the dates of most of the children.
Thank you
Jude

Mike, I found a census record for New York, 2nd election District 5th ward, 1870. Listed is Jeremiah Carroll age 60,wife Catherine age 40(wife).
Children
Jeremiah- 19 years old, which would make his bdate 1851.
brother Edward 18 yrs
brother Thomas 15yrs old
brother John 14 yrs old
and a sister Bridget age 12 yrs.

mother and father both born in Ireland. Children all born in New York. I know there is a age difference, as my Jeremiah (AKA Jeremy) was born in 1854 according to his death cert. Is there any chance that you could offer some advice on this? I looked at my SURNAMES and it said my membership was terminated? I promise to be a good girl, if you would help me in this.
Jude

Ps. Jeremiah Carroll and his wife Elizabeth Meehan had a Edward, John, Thomas, also a James and a Steven, Catherine, Elizabeth, Frances, Jeremiah

I know you are taking a well deserved vacation. But when you come back would you look at this?

Hi Judy...

In doing a quick scan of the 1870 census that you mentioned in your post.
1870____ Father Jeremiah is 40 years old   b. abt.1830
I took this info and forwarded to 1880 census.
It appears that the family has had a bad turn of events..
Father Jeremiah__ b. abt 1829 is living in a boarding house on Thompson St. NYC
I looked to see if this was some type of Institution  but there isn't any mention on the census sheet.
Jeremiah states that he has been unemployed for five months out of the 1880 census year.
Although, he says that he is married, I'm unable to locate Catherine--- so far.
It isn't unusual for men to say they are married even though they no longer live with the spouse. The woman may state that she is a widow_ only later one  finds that her husband is alive and well.

I've found various individuals  named in the 1870, that are living with other families.
There is no way of putting them together in this family group without more evidence of same.
If you have access to census images, you may want to try and trace this family through 1900 census.

Sending Warmest Wishes for the Holiday Season,
jelora

My great uncle was Thomas Carroll, he married a Ann L. Powers and they had 2 boys I think.  One I think is Anthony, can't remember the other.  Thomas was born in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada in 1877.  My grandmother lived in this household after her mother died in 1906.  They called her Bessie Carroll.  I am thinking that maybe if I find Thomas or some of his decendents, it will lead me to my Great-grandfather, Jeremiah Carroll, can you help with this?  Jeremiah was sometimes called Jeremy and he married Elizabeth Meehan, from Cobourg.  They all migrated to Cook co. Chicago, Illinois, I am thinking about 1879-1880.  There was a Jeremiah born to them in 1880. (Jeremiah)
thank you in advance
Jude

Mike
Would Jeremiah have to list his place of birth on his naturalization papers?  If so, Where could I get the copy?  I am trying to think of anything he would have signed that listed his place of birth, NOT just NY.  Any help appreciated
