Hello Kay

I am searching my mother's (Margaret Marie Elizabeth Convery) side of the family and have reached an impasse at my Great Grandfather Hugh Convery who was born in Ireland about 1849. His wife's name was Martha (maiden name unknown) and she was also born in Ireland in 1854.

I have found the following info on Hugh Convery. He lived and worked in the Port Glasgow area in the shipyards. He had the following children, MaryJane b: 1879, John b: 1881, Emma b: 1882, James ( my grandfather) b: 1887, Agnes b: 1889 and Hugh b: 1890. All his children were born in Scotland.

I am hoping you can assist me in finding Hugh Convery's ancestors.

Thanks

Jim Clarkson

Hello Jim

I think I have found Hugh's marriage to Martha, although unfortunately her maiden name is not given.  This is on Emerald Ancestors.  We now know the year, and the county is Antrim which is in Northern Ireland (Ulster).

Year of Marriage     Groom                       Bride           County
1877                        Hugh  CONVERY       Martha       Antrim

And I think this is the one below marked in red which I found on the Irish Family History Foundation site.  It is free to register on the site, and if you want to view and print a record it costs Euro 5.00.

Action Source Surname First Name Year County

Church Marriage Convery Hugh 1837 Co. Armagh
Church Marriage McConvery Hugh 1867 Co. Down
Church Marriage McConvery Hugh 1867 Co. Down
Church Marriage Convery Hugh 1874 Co. Antrim
Church Marriage Convery Hugh 1877 Co. Antrim

I will see if I can find any more information for you.

Jim - There are only these five birth records for Hugh Convery on the whole of he IFHF site at present, and I guess it could be any of the first four.

Hi Jim

I found these two marriages on Ancestry Ireland.

Marriages
Surname      Firstname      Year     Fathers Firstname   County
CONVERY HUGH         1874    PETER                  Antrim
CONVERY HUGH         1877    JOHN                   Antrim

If the 1877 marriage above is the correct one - as in message number 2 of this thread -  then Hugh's father was JOHN Convery.

Hi Jim

I feel the next step would be to obtain Hugh and Martha's marriage cert. as in message 2 as this should confirm his father's name.  Otherwise we are only guessing, and we want to be certain of our facts before delving further back.

One thing I do know is that the Converys originated from Co. Derry.

Let me know how you get on and I will be happy to pursue the search further.

Hi Marian,

As suggested I will order the marriage license and advise you when I receive it.

Thanks Jim

Hi Jim

I was just thinking that we are of course assuming that Hugh and Martha married in Ireland.  Could they have been married in Scotland?

That thought never occured to me however noting that all the children were born in Scotland the possibility of a marriage in Scotland is reasonable.

Thanks Jim

Hi Jim

Yes, we need to explore all avenues.  I found another Hugh Convery on the web who was married to Martha Sturges, but the other details did not fit.  So we can at least be aware that there was another Hugh Convery married to a Martha.
