OK Barry, looking at your Ancestry tree again it seems it was the correct family that I found after all.  So it appears that Jane was actually born in Carlisle, Cumberland - which is a long way from Gateshead.  I am wondering if the family moved from Carlisle to Gateshead very shortly after she was born, and hence she was christened in Gateshead.
