My Ford family came from Ninfield in East Sussex, to Australia in 1838.  John Ford came with his wife, Eliza,nee Harris and two of their children.  On the same ship was John's younger brother James, who was single.

Prior to John Ford coming to Australia his father, James Foord, had been transported our here for smuggling in 1829.  He had been caught with several others who were all convicted and transported, although at first they were given a death sentence.  James was invovled in the Battle of Sidley Green, where an excise man had been killed.  Sadly James only lived 6 weeks after his arrival and he died in Sydney in the February of 1830.

I have researched this Ford family back in East Sussex to around the 1700s and would love to share details and exchange notes with any others who may have connections to it.

There were many families who came to Australia from the districts of East Sussex and many of them intertwine through the families.   Some of these are SHEATHER; MILHAM; FAIRHALL; FRIEND; STARR;

If you have connections to any of these families perhaps I can help you with your research.

Regards,
Min

Life in Australia:
The first we know of John and Eliza after the ship's arrival in Sydney is of the birth of their 4th child, Frances in 1842 on the Hunter River, near Maitland. Subsequently they had another 9 children whilst living in the area around Maitland. Around 1870 John and Eliza left the Hunter and transferred north to the Clarence River, living in the Grafton district. Most of their adult children had come north to this area, although they still had ties, through family, with the Hunter district.
Life Before Australia:
John and Eliza came to Australia on the "Strathfieldsaye" with his younger brother, James Ford (sometimes spelt Foord) and her younger sister Naomi Harris. They also had their two small children, John and Hannah, with them on board. Another son, their eldest, James Ford Harris, had been left with Eliza's parents back in England.

Hi Mike,

Yes the information from First Families is my own.  I have done extensive research into this Ford family and entered this because being my mum's line I am always looking for other family members in the hope of helping them with their research.  Re the Starr you mentioned, I think that referred to my other posting.  As I mentioned I have just commenced a STARR FAMILY HISTORY PROJECT, and am interested in all manner of information about these people.  They are connected to the Ford family in a couple of instances so the families become a bit complex.

Am willing to help anyone who may be looking for FORDs or STARRs from East Sussex.

Regards,
Min
