Hi Kristi,

In reference to  the FELIX family, do you have any knowledge of their background?

The family seems to have been in the USA  for quite sometime prior to the 1920 Census. ______
Information found on  Joseph N. Felix's death certificate.
-- Joseph, was born 1869 in Emitsburg, Maryland and
his father FRANK FELIX was  born in Allentown, PA.

Hopefully, you were able to download the death certificates from the Familysearch lab site.
I'll do  some research to see if I can find the country of origin of this Felix family.

In the 1920 Census Samuel Knaggs is listed as a border in the household.

Are you able to   download actual Census images from any resource on the Internet, such as Ancestry or Heritage Quest? If not I'll send them to your home  e-mail  , if you  send the address to me.

Take care,
Jelora

Hi Kristi,

I did a quick search on the FELIX family. They come from Adams County, Pennsylvania.... Census  source.

There are many families with the FELIX surname living in this part of Pennsylvania...mainly of  German descent.  But, I haven't found anything more on the family history to prove that they are from Germany (Prussia)

Please Note; Information found on the death certificate of  Joseph N. Felix , father of Bernard is incorrect. Joseph was born in Pennsylvania___ his mother Catherine was born in Maryland.

1870___Liberty Twp. Adams Pennsylvania

 Francis  .---29-- Cooper b. Penn

He is married: wife Catherine_25___ born Maryland__

Sarah__4_____Penn

Mary__2________Penn

Joseph_ 5 mos__( your ancestor) born (Dec,1869)

His father(?) lives in next household.___ Unproven

 Felix Joseph______55__cooper ___b.Penn

_____Joseph S__18_____Penn

Sarah _______   13

Jennie_________12

Joseph________10 ( Bernard's father)

Fannie_________8

Charles_________6

John___________10mos

John Ott____boarder __20

I finally found BERNARD FELIX born 1899

Ancestry had the family indexed as FELISS

1900_Lucas, Toledo, Ohio

Line 73__Address_1111 Bigelow Ave.

Felix Joseph_ head _ born Dec 1869__ age 30 marr 2years B.PENN parents SWITZERLAND

____Emma _ wife_ June 1869 marr 2yrs   1child_1 Living_Ohio_  parents Pennsylvania

____Bernard _son_ Nov 1899_6 mos_________________Ohio_PENN__Ohio

Joseph must have misunderstood the census question and put  place of origin ... you just received a bonus! SWITZERLAND is place  of birth for his FELIX family line.

Joseph married Emma Baum

You can find some  information at this web-site on the BAUM family

Biographies from Historical and Biographical Annals

by Morton Montgomery

On Nov. 15, 1877, Mr. Herbine married Sarah Baum, of Wooster, Wayne Co., Ohio, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Zacharias) Baum. Mr. Baum was a native of Berks county, but in 1865 moved to Wooster, Ohio, where he was engaged in farming until his death, on a farm of 160 acres. Both he and Mrs. Baum are buried at Wooster. They had ten children, as follows: William, of Kansas City, Mo.; Daniel, of Sedalia Mo.; Mandilla, m. to Robert Beard, of Toledo, Ohio; Charles, who is buried at Wooster; Ammon, who died in 1909, at Indianapolis, Ind., and is buried at Wooster; Henry, of Jersey City, N. J.; Sarah, Mrs. Herbine; Maberry, deceased, and buried at Wooster; Emma, m. to Joseph Felix, of Toledo, Ohio; Kate, twin to Emma, unmarried, of Toledo. To Mr. and Mrs. Herbine have been born three children: (1) Edwinna graduated from the Keystone State Normal School in 1901, and taught school five terms, four at Locust Dale, in Amity township, and one at Royersford. She married Dr. J. H. Ludwig, of Boyertown, and they have one daughter, Miriam. (2) Estella B. graduated from the Keystone State Normal School in the class of 1902, and is engaged in teaching. She taught her first term in Douglass township, at Mauger's school, three terms at Monocacy, and in the spring of 1905 went to Spring City where she still is. (3) Henry L. is a farmer in Amity township. He m. Mamie Marquett. No children.

Note: Kate the twin to Emma is living with the  Felix family in the 1910 census.

Will let you know if I find anything more on this family.

Take care,

Carole Jean

Hi, Jelora!!!

So, this would mean that my great-great grandfather was from Switzerland?  In this case, this mean that the surname Felix was actually Feliss?  I would like to know, how did you find this out?  That is so interesting!!!  Thank you!!!

God bless you!!!

Kristi

Hi Kristi,

>>>So, this would mean that my great-great grandfather was from Switzerland? >>>

The above has to be verified but it is a place to start

Bernard____ was your father? born in Ohio_1899

Joseph N____was your grandfather_ born 1869_Pennsylvania

Francis______was your gr. grandfather_ born abt 1841_ Pennsylvania

_______perhaps Joseph..needs proven___ gr.gr. grandfather__ Pennsylvania

By looking at the above you see that  the FELIX family came early to America.

The census says Switzerland but this is a fact that needs to be proven..It is only a clue as to the country of origin.

>>>>In this case, this mean that the surname Felix was actually Feliss>>>

The family name is FELIX not as the  transcriber of the census image read the writing of the census...FELISS

If you can look at the census page itself , the first three letters are readable but the last part is harder to decipher. Then it becomes a choice by the person doing the transcribing..
This is why so many names can't be found  in the census ...poor spelling...among many other factors

This family lived in an area of Pennsylvania...settled by the Pennsylvania Dutch...
They resided in ADAMS County where Gettysburg is located . This county borders the State of Maryland.

Kristi,  if you contact me off this Group board, I can give you direction as to how to proceed with your family FELIX research.
Take care,
jelora

Hi, Jelora!!!

I just need to make a little correction here.

Bernard was my grandfather---my mother's father.  This would mean that his father, Joseph N., is my great grandfather and his father, Francis, is my great-great grandfather.

Yes, I will contact you personally and then I can find out more about my family's ancestory.

God bless!!!

Kristi
