Please can someone help me find out about Robert Greer, father of Christina Greer 1884 - 1971 and also of other known siblings Robert and Anna Lisa ) may have been others). Very little known, wife believed to be named Anne ( not sure of spelling). Any information on this family would be appreciated as we only know about Christina (Grandmother). At time of Christina' wedding to William Burns, she was living at Bridge St. Portadown and a letter recommending her for marriage from W.J.Macaulay, Minister of 1st Presbyterian Church, Portadown, states that the minister has known her since she was a child as she has been brought up in his congregatiom. She was married aged 19 on 24.08.1904 in the Presb. church by this minister -solomised at Vinecash (entry no 5 in the register), Parish of Kilmore, Co.Armagh . Her father named as Robert Greer - carpenter. Please can someone help or point me in the direction of how to research this as we are based in Southern England. Thanks Sandra | |

Hi Mike, thanks again for all this - it is sooooo exciting to actually be getting somewhere as I have been "doing" family tree for almost a year and have found out loads on other people but nothing on the Irish sides. It has been great discovering - even when I have gone down wrong branches - and I have found the social history of the people and the way they lived absolutely fascinating. Thanks again Sandra |

Hi Mike I have had a bit of a break through in that my husband (whose family this is) has remembered that a cousin was given the middle name of Houston - so that it looks as if the marriage mentioned at the start of this correspondance is correct and the boy was given his maternal grandmothers name. This means that the additional siblings are correct but possibly the later findings do not relate directly to our family but might be wider branches of the family. Thanks again Sandra |

Hi again after a long gap! I have been hunting hard. Didn't get any response from the Church in Portadown although tried a few times, but did look on Irish Family History Foundation and think I have come up with the correct civil marriage record at Portadown 1st Presbyterian Church on 08/08/1874 for Robert Greer, full age, Carpenter, son of Alexander Greer (occ. Miller) and Ann Hughston full age daughter of Robert Hughston (occ Carpenter) . No wive's names given. Witnesses James Taylor and Robert Huston. Spelling of Houston, Hughston, Huston all a bit suspect but looks a possible record. Is there likely to be any further records back? Also found Anna E Greer aged 37, civil marriage on 30.12.1920, in registar's office, Lurgan Rd, Co Armagh to Joseph McCollogh aged 33 (occ Shoe maker). Anna's father Robert occ Carpenter and Joseph's father, Jacob (occ mechanic) . Not sure where to go next but am pleased with this! Sandra |
