I am trying to find out about my grandfather James GOODWIN.
He was born in London (I think unfortunately he has put different places on several certificates as his birth place) according to his marriage certificate.
His fathers name is William GOODWIN no mothers name on certificate.
He served in the Royal Navy and was discharged in 1896 with Rheumatism this I found out from his Army records here.
He left his family here and went back to England , he was still here in 1937 as I have a copy of a letter he wrote to Base Records asking for a duplicate of his Military Discharge as he was  applying for the pension.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Heather

Heather i feel he was not in the british navy At the time ,i think that he could well have just worked on the steamships.
The licence was issued in 1920,he was probably staying in america for some reason.
The only way he could get back to Australia was to work his Passage.
So applied for a temporary Licence.
This allowing him to work on a ship going back to Australia
may not have had the money for the passage back
as you said he May have been in the navy,But Quit

Complicated little Prob, jelora Our manager in America has not seen these Licences before. So new to her
I sent her it by mail so she could see it
Hopefully you will hear back

Take care

Mike

Heather did you realise that he is in army uniform,The watch is huge on his Arm.This was STANDARD military uniform the watch is covered in a leather case.
He must have been in the army for 1914 /18 ww1.
When this pic was taken,So he would have Military records also

So may be worth trying for his Military record.

Hi Mike,

I have a copy of his service record that is where it says he was in the Royal Navy and discharged in 1896 with Rheumatism.
The attachments to the previous email are from his service record for WW1.
If you need anything else just let me know and will send if I have it.

Heather found him in his Military records.Check his regimenal number .WITH THIS YOU CAN FIND OUT what medals he won
Via our National Archives.YOU WOULD THEN NEED TO  CONTACT  the Army Headquarters in Glasgow for his military Record. It will give his Parents Address .His Service records etc They do Charge for this service, about £40
So it can work out quite a bit
To download his Medal Index Card go to the National Archives uk .DOCUMENTS ON LINE.Type in James goodwin ,look for the Military number 2115.They charge £3.50 english to get the record. It only tells you what Regiments he served in And any medals recieved

Hi Mike,

Below is the reply I got from the hospital.
Do you have any other suggestions on what I should do now to find him.
It is a pity his mothers name wasn't on his marriage certificate as it may have made it easier to find him.
Thank you for your help it is very nuch appreciated.
Heather

Dear Mrs Carter

Thank you for returning the access form in relation to your enquiry re your
grandfather JAMES GOODWIN.

On re-reading the early correspondence I noted there were only three
identified volumes and have taken the opportunity to look at these volumes.
I am sorry to report that further investigation has revealed that these
registers and casebooks do not include details of military patients.

As you mention that you are seeking further family history details of your
grandfather, I wonder if you might wish to use the services (fee-paying) of
the library's genealogist or a local record searcher?  I am attaching
details of both services to this email.

Best wishes

Alison Smith
