My Mother Phyllis Mary Gibb was born in Liverpool 22/9/1917  to Theresa and George Gibb. I believe ( was never actually told ) that my Grandmother and Grandfather parted and he went to live in Wales.  I also believe that he had another family.  We have been trying to trace my Grandparents details but have not been able to  to find any information at all, as my Mother was an only child  I have no one else to ask does anyone  know  how I can get any details.  My Mother married Irving Bell and had 6 maybe 7 children

My mother Phyllis was born in Liverpool to Theresa and George Gibb  her date of birth was 22/9/1917, I never knew my Grandfather as I believe ( never actually told ) that he and my Grandmother parted and he went to live in Wales.  I also believe he had another family.  We have been trying to trace my Grandparents family tree but could not find either of them in the censors. As my mother was an only child I don't have anyone else to ask.

Once again Dot this is Kay here and I will try and help if I can. I'll have a look into what I can and get back to you if (and when) I can find any further information.

Just a few further questions Dot that you may be able to answer and which would help me track back possibly.

Your grandfather George Gibb - do you know approximately his year and place of birth and his occupation?

Your grandmother Teresa - do you know approximately her year and place of birth, occupation and maiden name?

Did your mother, Phyllis, have any siblings?

I will see if I can throw some light on matters but the above would certainly help, if you know.

With the help of Mike (who actually found this one) we have come up with a marriage record, though the name is George Gibbs not Gibb and Teresa (without an "h") Howe , it looks a strong possibility:

Marriages Sep 1906   (>99%)
ALDOUS  William    Norwich  4b 221  Scan available - click to view
GIBBS  George Marston    Norwich  4b 221  Scan available - click to view
Howe  Teresa Mary    Norwich  4b 221  Scan available - click to view
MANN  Edith    Norwich  4b 221  Scan available - click to view

Will continue to dig and see what, if anything, crops up.

Here is a birth record for the only George Marston Gibbs I could find - this would fit for the above marriage entry:

Births Sep 1880   (>99%)
GIBBS  George Marston    Walsingham  4b

296

However, for some reason there is no birth record showing for T(h)eresa Howe but I will check elsewhere for this also.

I've found an entry on the 1901 census for George M Gibbs and feel this is the same George as the marriage and birth above:

Robert M Gibbs b: 1845 Runham, Norfolk - Head - Painter
Charlotte b: 1856 Lyng, Norfolk - wife
Frank M b: 1876 Halvergate, Norfolk - son - carver and guilder
Latilia b: 1878 Great Yarmouth, Norfolk - daughter - machinist (tailor)
George M b: 1881 Fakenham, Norfolk - son - baker/bread maker
Cecil M b: 1885 Norwich - son - builders clerk
Elizabeth M M b: 1888 Norwich - daughter - scholar
Lenora b: 1891 Norwich
Hannah M b: 1894 Norwich

At this time the family were residing in the village of Heigham, Norfolk

Going back to the 1891 census there was also an entry for Stanley Gibbs b: 1882 Melton Constable, Norfolk - son.  He is on the 1901 census too but now as a solider at Chelsea Barracks.

Now on the basis that Liverpool seems to be the correct area for your mother I'm just wondering what may have caused George and Teresa to move north from Norfolk, if indeed we have the right families here.

I have found a birth entry, with Marian's help, of a Teresa Maud born in St Olave in 1890.  However, I'm not convinced this is the correct Teresa because she would have only been 16 at the time of a marriage in 1906.  Going on from there I've found a marriage for Teresa M in St Olave 1915 to someone by the name of Ingram, so I think we can safely discard this Teresa altogether.  We need to work on the basis that if the Gibbs entry above is the right one, we are looking for Teresa Mary Howe possibly born a little nearer the same year as George.

I will keep looking!

I've tried all the various spellings for Teresa and Theresa, Howe and How but not finding a birth record anywhere.  However, I then tried looking for the births of all Howe babies in Norfolk between 1880 and 1885 and found one that could fit - not a lot of information to go on but bearing in mind some parents would register a baby before they had decided upon a name this COULD be the correct one:

HOWE - female - 1880 - Norwich.

The only thing that's foxing me here though is that whatever spelling or place of birth I use, I'm not coming up with any entries on the 1891 or 1901 census returns for Teresa Howe.  Not sure about that one.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INFORMATION, SEEMS LIKELY THAT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT PEOPLE SORRY I DON'T HAVE MUCH INFORMATION TO HELP YOU.  MY GRANDFATHER GEORGE WAS A PURSER WITH THE ELDER DEMPSTER LINE IN LIVERPOOL. I THINK MY GRANDMOTHER WAS BORN BETWEEN 1878 & 1880 SHE WAS A SEEMISTRESS AND YES YOU ARE RIGHT THERE IS NO " H " IN HER NAME = TERESA.  FROM WHAT I CAN FIND OUT SHE HAD A BUSINESS IN ISLINGTON = LIVERPOOL WHICH WAS BOMBED.  MY MOTHER MAY HAVE HALF BROTHERS  OR SISTERS?  GRANDFATHER WENT TO WALES AND MAY HAVE OTHER CHILDREN BUT NOT SURE WHETHER HE REMARRIED AS MY GRANDMOTHER WAS CATHOLIC AND BELIEVE SHE WOULDN'T GIVE HIM A DIVORCE.  ALL HERESAY.

Hi Dot

I've not had chance over the weekend to investigate further, but rest assured I will certainly have a good look during the next day or so and report back with any findings.

What I'm finding rather puzzling is that there seems to be no trace of Teresa in the 1891 or 1901 census returns.  I've checked various spellings of both her names and also the christian and surnames on their own (with the other information we have about her) but drawing a blank.  We really need to see the 1911 census!!!!
