Hello Barry

Good to hear from you again.  We appreciate your support for the site!

Without looking it up, I certainly know of Whitegate in Co. Clare, and also Whitegate near Midleton in Co. Cork.  But I will check it out for you.

Re Catherine's family who returned to the UK, if you would give me some names, birthdates and birth places, and an idea of when they came back from Australia, and where they settled in England, I will also check out the censuses for you.

Marian

Have a look at this, Barry.  It might be helpful.

Whitegate is actually in County Clare, just near the border with County Galway, and on the west side of  Lough Derg.  It's actually at the most southerly end of County Galway.

Barry - Mike has found a descendant of Elizabeth Joyce of Whitegate, who married William Lucas.  She is descended from William Bertram Joyce Lucas, one of William Lucas' sons.  It might be worth contacting this lady:

[email protected]  [joanne]

ID: I14739
Name: John William Bertram Joyce Lucas
Sex: M
Birth: Abt 1897 in Whitegate, Limerick, County Clare, Ireland.
Death: 1971/1981

Father: William Lucas
Mother: Elizabeth Alice Joyce

Marriage 1 Olive Jane Crowe b: 5 OCT 1893 in Lower Hutt,New Zealand

Elizabeth's mother was Mary Joyce b 1831 in Whitegate.  It looks like
this side of family also went down under to New Zealand or Oz, as William
married in New Zealand.  He may have been a sister or cousin of Edmund.

There were not many Joyces living in Whitegate around
that time.
