Hi All

I am hopeing someone may be able to help me or point me in the right direction

I am trying to trace a Robert Leith, I am assuming from the info I have, he moved to Scotland sometime between 1861 and 1865 (the potato famine?!), On his sons birth record Henry Leith was born in Scotland 1865 it states Robert and his wife Mary Jane Hendry were married in 1853 in Co Derry and the census info states the bithplace as Ireland. His daughter on the census was born in Ireland C1860 she was called Annie. Robert and Mary were born C1831 according to the scotish census info

Many thanks
Paul

Hi paul and Welcome,I found a listing using the IGI that Robert may have left Derry Slightly later. There was a Thomas Leith born Birth: 30 SEP 1867 , Londonderry, Ireland To Parents Robert Leith,I think the Surname of Mary Jane Has been misread. As they have her as Mary Jane Henery.I
So we have to Assume He either left there 1867 or slightly later

Hi paul I asked a friend who does Scottish Ancestry if she would help on your Family.Teri has kindly sent the following for you

Mike

Name: Thomas Leith
Date of Birth: 30 September 1867
Parents: Robert Leith and Mary Jane Henery
Church: Bellaghy
Civil District: Magherafelt
Sub District: Ballyscullion
County: Derry

This was on both Emerald Ancestors and the British Isles Vital Records CDs. I assume this child must have died since there was no sign of him in Scotland and since another boy born in 1869 was named Thomas too. Since Robert and Henry were born in Scotland in 1864 and 1865 it looks like the family dotted back and forth across the Irish Sea.

I found no marriage record but checked out the children's birth records for a date and place. Robert's states marriage took place in Co Derry on 1st may 1853 whilst Henry states 1st May 1854 so I dont think they were too sure of the year. I cant help but think there must be other older children if 1853 or 1854 is correct. Henry's birth cert seems to indicate a place in Derry but I couldnt make it out so I've attached the image to see if you can decipher it.

1871 census does show Annie as 11, born in Ireland. It shows the father Robert as aged about 57 and his wife Mary Jane aged about 35, both born in Ireland.

1881 census has Robert now only 50!! although he was 57 in 1871 and Mary Jane also 50 although she was just 35 in 1871!!! There is another child list : Mary Jane aged 7 so she must have been born around 1873-74. There is also a nephew John aged 30 living with the family.

1891 census Robert is now 60 and Mary Jane is 50. You'll need to hazard a guess about their real ages. I think it's fair to say that May Jane was probably quite a bit younger than Robert. In this census the only child still at home is Mary Jane and she's a weaver.
Cheers
Teri

Robert Leith, the father, died in Glasgow on 31 January, 1897. Cause of Death: Bronchitis. His age on death cert is given as 54!!! The informant was his wife Mary Henry. His parents are given as James Leith, a butcher and Sarah McFadden, both deceased.

Mcfadden James Richmond street Londonderry Butchers

Slater's Commercial Directory of Ireland 1846

It looks like Mcfadden's Owned the Butchers Shop And also they may Have used The Mcfadden /James .Not sure why they would do that.Other theory is It was James McFaddens Butchery.James and sarah Just living there

Hello

I believe the town where John Leith was living according to the census was INISRUSH in Co. Derry (or Co. Londonderry as it was called at that time).
