Hello

I am wondering if you could help me to find the parents or ancestors of John LEWINGTON please.  I believe his wife was Mary Franklin/ Frankling.

My unconfirmed details are that John LEWINGTON was either born in Ramsbury Wiltshire England or Brentwood Surrey England, about 1801, he married Mary 04.03.1821.  John was a coal merchant.
In 1841 census for England John & Mary had the following children
Sarah 20, William 18, Joshua 17, Elizabeth 14, Job 13, Abasolom 9, Thomas 7, Henry 4, Mary Ann 2, another daughter Lydia was born in 1844.

The 1881 Census shows John Lewington aged 80 years, retired coal merchant, born Brentwood Surrey, living with his wife Mary 79 years, born Melksham Wiltshire England. They live in Melksham.

Thank you for any information you can give me.

Hi

Do you think the naming pattern of children in England could be a clue as to the parents of John.

Regards

Jenny

Well, the lady from Texas would need to provide proof of John's birthplace.  Be very careful to corroborate your information, and don't just assume others have it right.  Maybe she has, but........

And as we have seen, and we see it all the time in our searching, the census information is not always correct.  According to the 1841, John was born in Wiltshire. In 1851 it says Marlboro', Wiltshire.  In 1861 and 1871 in Surrey.  Then in 1881 in Brentwood, Essex!  Three different counties altogether!  In the 1861 it says born "Casorton", and Mike feels this should read "Carshalton" which is in Surrey.  There is a large hospital there called St. Helier's, so it's possible he could have actually been born there.  As I said before, he may well have been christened in Wiltshire.

The naming patterns could be right, but then again it is just guesswork and we need to know for sure - and the only way is through documentation.  So you will need to find the church which holds the registers.  Marlborough is less than ten miles from Ramsbury, so you may well find he was christened there.  Then you will be able to find out his parents for certain.

Hi Marian

Do you have anything further on John Lewington and Susanne Buckland's family, I seem to have hit a brick wall, whilst I have all the family forward from John Lewington and Mary Franklin, I can't go back.

Thank you most sincerely for your assistance.

Jenny

Both of these married an Elizabeth, so they could be one and the same person.

Hi Jenny

I did run a parent search for them, but nothing forthcoming I am afraid.  It is probably too far back.  Once you get back beyond 1800 it becomes much more difficult.  I did find more ancestors though, as you will have seen.

Best regards
Marian
