Henry Mooney was my great-great-great grandfather. Would like to know his birth, marriage and death dates. I do know that his wife was Elizabeth Anderson(her info too please). They had several children, and cam to Canada approximately around 1830's. There one son, Robert was my gr. gr. grandfather, who also had a son named Robert, my gr. grandfather. Great grandfather Robert, was married to a Martha Ingham. Their one son, Charles was my grandfather. Henry and Elizabeth settled in Essa Township, Simcoe County, Ont. Canada Cindy | |

I have just found on at PRO, index of discharged Chelsea Hospital patients. Reference WO 121/57/106 - for my g.g.g.fa. "Henry Mooney, born Tynen, Armagh, served in 23rd Foot Regiment, discharged aged 22 after 6 years of service, 1802." Henry Mooney married an Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and had 8 children, 4 males, 4 females, who all came to Canada c.1832. Henry had commuted his military pension for a land grant in Canada, and settled in Essa Twp. Simcoe Co. Ontario. Looking for any info on this Mooney family prior to 1832. Thanks, Carolyn ~~~~~~~~~~ Re: Henry MOONEY, Tynan, Armagh Author: Lillian Stoner Date: 12 Mar 2002 10:36 PM GMT In Reply to: Henry MOONEY, Tynan, Armagh by: Carolyn Hudson
Hi Carolyn (and other Mooney-watchers): This is another strange tie between the Essa Township Mooneys and the Kitley, Leeds Mooneys. I have recently come into information from an old family bible that indicates "my" Mooney came from Co. Armagh also! These guys have got to be related! (If you remember, my line starts with a Robert Mooney born abt. 1776 in Ireland who marries a Nancy last name unknown)and who shows up in the Kitley census first in l839. ) The Armagh note was in a family bible owned by William Mooney (his son) and states, he (William)was born in l811 in Armagh,.Co. Ireland, came to Canada 1831.
Anyone have any more information about the movement of any of these Mooneys from Armagh to Ontario in the early l830s? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: Henry MOONEY, Tynan, Armagh Author: Carolyn Hudson Date: 12 Mar 2002 2:26 AM GMT Surnames: MOONEY In Reply to: Re: Henry MOONEY, Tynan, Armagh by: Lillian Ston
Hi Lillian: When going through the War Office original records, at the Public Records Office in Kew... I was tracing the pay records for Henry Mooney. Appearing beside his name, over a period of months, was a Robert Mooney, and at the time I wondered if they were brothers. Did your Robert get a land grant in Kitley? Do you know if he ever served in the 4th Reg. Kings Own; or 23rd Reg. of Foot? Carolyn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Carolyn Hudson to me, April 2003: 1861 census for Essa Twp. a Henry Mooney, aged 90, living with (b.c. 1770) living with John and Mary Ann McManus family in Essa, 1861 census. Religion is listed as C.Mormon. I am wondering if this Mary Ann might have been one of the 4 daughters. There can't have been too many Henry Mooney's living in Essa in that era. I also know that one of Henry's sons, John Mooney, married to Jane .... after John died, Jane went to Utah with twin sons, Cyrus and Jeramiah (I have a letter from her in my possession),and was going to the Mormon temple.
It's possible that the McManus family, who were Mormon, were looking after the elderly Henry, and he was listed as Mormon too on the census. And, Essa had a Mormon revival in the mid 1800s. I have also been in touch by email with the Michigan Mooney family and told them about Ann and John Switzer, so they are on the lookout for Switzer information in their search.
Hopefully with all these various threads out there one of us will come up with some good hard evidence for relationships. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Found this marriage, possibly another Son of Henry and Elizabeth Mooney: James Mooney to Mary Ann Wilkenson of Essa by Banns Feb 24, 1840 Witness: John Mooney/Gavin Irwin (?) hard to make out that name and: James MOONEY & Sarah Ann CANE, both of Essa, on November 19, 1847, by license, wtn: George WATSON & James MANNING, by William Fraser United Presbyterian Minister ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Death of a Barnard Mooney b abt 1820/Ireland, died 1922 Simcoe County in West Gwilliambury, possibly a nephew?
