Marj - do you have access to Ancestry? If so, you will find the family on the 1861 and 1871. On the 1881 census, John is not listed with his wife, but she is NOT listed as a widow, so he must have still been alive. The census that year was taken on the night of 3rd April. Apart from 1841, which was taken on 6 June, all the censuses were taken in late March/early April. As there are so many variant spellings of the name Moloney, you will have to be careful when ordering a certificate. You may want to phone the GRO beforehand to make sure you are getting the right one, otherwise it could cost you quite a bit in wasted certs. I do know this from experience. Marian |

Marian Thanks for info, now this may sound daft but I have never order a certificate before, so what sort of info do I give them ?, as the others I have copies of were from ones my Aunt had who sadly died last month. Thanks Marj |

Hi Marj You will need to purchase some certificates along the way, as this is really the only actual proof you will have. That is why they are often called the "building blocks" of your research. This is the GRO site which we use: When completing the online form, only fill in info that a) is mandatory and b) you are certain of. This way you are more likely to get the right one. They are normally £7.00 each. Wishing you success. Marian |

Marian seems I was told wrong , So back to the drawing board, but as Ii was going though things found that a John Maloney was in a work house in 1891 thats two yrs after Margaret died and he was a windower ?? Also found this info On the 1851 census gives a John Maloney as a Private Marine at Woolwhich Dockyard, This is the 1861 census, 15 Bewers Court Ann Malony 4 Catherine Malony 13 Ellen Malony 8 John Malony 40 Margaret Malony 36 Mary Malony 6 William Malony 2 months <<<< My Grt Grandad This is the 1871 census family lived at Greys Buildings Annie Maloney 14 Catherine Maloney 23 Ellen Maloney 18 John Maloney 47 Plasters Labourer Margaret Maloney 47 Margaret Maloney 2 Mary Maloney 16 William Maloney 10 In the 1881, they lived at 23 Barrett CT. And only William and Margaret live there with their mother so think John was woking away from home, as it does not give Margaet as a window. Why I think the top one is John as the family has a history of being Marines, in fact Ihave my Grandfathers discharge papers, and my Dad was also one as were three of his bro's and I was always told it was a family thing to do Does this make sense to you Marj |

Hi Marj Firstly, thank you for the lovely Thanksgiving message. We all appreciated it. Sorry to hear it's back to the drawing board re your records office. Now, I had already found the family on the 1861, 1871 and 1881. I think I mentioned this in my messages 17 and 20. Plus the fact that John was not with them on the 1881 and yet Margaret was not listed as a widow. I have now checked your findings on the 1851 where John was a marine. You will have a better idea than I would about this as you have more info. I have also found his wife Margaret in1851 residing at 8 Walmer Place, St. Marylebone. Age 23 and married, born Limerick, Ireland and working as a shirt maker. She is living with Margaret Fitzgibbon (wrongly transcribed as Hibsgibber!) who is unmarried, age 23 and from Limerick, too. It is hard to know if that is your John in the workhouse in 1891. I have searched but haven't been able to find John's death record as yet. Marian |

Marian Thanks for your messages, I am at a loss, why we can not find his death, but when I saw the name John Maloney, as living in the work house, and as a windower, hoped this is him, can not remember now what it gave as his job, but will look today, gosh why do we not ask these questions of our parents etc when we were young Thanks again Marj |

Hi Marj The John Maloney in the workhouse in 1891 was a General Labourer. The only death in London anywhere near the right age is this one, but I am very doubtful. Deaths Mar 1907 (>99%) ---------------------------------------- MALONEY John 75 Hackney 1b 399 Could he have moved in with one of his children? If so, do you know where they lived? Marian |

Good morning Marian Can not find any info on John via family, but do have the records of Henry Robert Maloney his grandson, when he was 11 he went to Greewich Navel School and at the time they lived in I Imperial Buildings Camberwell. His Father William, was born Marylebone and his Mother was born in Islington, I am not sure where this relates to Hackney ? But have found this In the 1881 census think I have found Margaret as head but still married and Laundress She is also in the 1891 census as a widow, and still working as a laundress, living at 53 Cowper Street I am getting confursed now lol Marj |
