I am looking for details of John Joseph Markham and his wife, Mary Sullivan Markham who lived at Toonagh Clooney above Quin, County Clare in the l830s.

I have no life events for them or where they are buried.  John Joseph had 13 acres at Toonagh, which he farmed with his brother or father in law Pat Sullvan according to the 1825 Tithe reports.  He had 5 sons (one died as a babe)  Michael, Patrick, Daniel and Martin came to Australia in the l850s and l860s.  He also had 3 girls Mary who may have stayed at home in Ireland, Bridget and Anne came to Australia in l860s.

Any information appreciated.   When Martin our line came to Australia, he had a reference from a Father Crabb so that may indicate the church in which they worshipped.  Many thanks Carolyn

Hi Carolyn

I will see what I can do to help you in this search.  So please keep checking on this board for any findings I make.

It sounds as though they were a Catholic family.

Hi Carolyn

Please could you advise me approximate date of birth/marriage of your ancestors, as we would need this as a basis for a search.

Thank you.

These are the only deaths listed on the Irish Family History Foundation site at present, although I hasten to add that Co. Clare records are not yet in the database.

The Clare/Limerick county border changed over the years, so don't rule these out altogether.

Hi Marion, it is estimated that John Joseph Markham was born about l800 and his wife the same era.  They would have been married about l820s and the youngest child born l840 (Martin Markham).  In the l825 Griffiths Valuation I found a John Joseph Markham spelt Marcum with Pat Sullivan as farming 13and half acres at Toonagh, Clooney Clare.

The John Joseph Markham across the border in Limerick sounded promising but I dont know if he would have lived to l00 years plus especially in those times.

It is believed that a daughter Mary stayed at home with the oldies, when her siblings came to Australia.  Thank you Carolyn

Hi Carolyn

The John Joe Markham d. 1911 could easily have been a descendant.

Hi Marion, firstly the John Joe Markham could not have been a descendant as all the boys came out to Australia in the 1850s and l860s.  it is believed only one daughter Mary remained in Ireland, but we think that she may have immigrated too and are checking this in OZ.

We know all about Martin Markham he is my husbands great grandfather and it is his parents who remained in Ireland that we seek information about.

Any other clues, thanks for your assistance, Carolyn.
