Hello,

Searching for my paternal great grandparents from Ireland.

Thomas Moore b.1850  based on date of death  as follows:
Died: Mar 13th 1910 Providence, Rhode Island USA (confirmed)
s/o Robert Moore and Bridget ? Cole This information is from RI archives.

Wife: Ellen Grace b.abt 1850 Dublin, Ireland
d/o Patrick Grace and Mary O' Reilly
Birth based on death date of April 14, 1925 in Pawtucket,RI (info also from RI Archives)

Unknown if they married in Ireland or USA.

Thomas immigrated in 1875 to New York per census. No marriage found in New York or in Rhode Island. They appear in Rhode Island 1880 census with their daughter Mary Julia my grandmother being 2 yrs old. b. May 11, 1878 in Providence, Rhode Island

I have not found any Moore connections to these people anywhere I have searched.
I'm hoping to obtain siblings of Thomas so as to be able to continue my search here in USA as there are thousands of Moores in Rhode Island alone never mind anywhere else in the country.

Thank you in advance for your efforts.
Jen

Jen - I cannot locate Thomas on the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.  Can you tell me who was living with him at that time, and any other details that would help me find them?

Hi Jen

I found this on the Castle Garden site.  If the third one listed here is your Thomas, he arrived in 1876, not 1870.

Hi Marion,

I had a thought last night. Was Northern Ireland and rest of it not split during those years due to religion. All these family members on both sides were staunch Catholics.  Ellen Grace and Thomas Moore, also my grandmother Mary Julia and a young son who died at 5yrs old in 1916 were all buried in St, Francis Irish Catholic Cemetery at their death. Confirmed by death certs and RI Archives.

Also of note is that my grandmother married 1st marriage to French Catholic. Then lived with my grandfather but no trace of a marriage anywhere. Had two sons one above and my father by him. Had them baptised at birth without husband being aware. He was staunch Protestant. I tell you this as it may effect the search area. I'm afraid I am not up to date on the Irish issues.

Thanks for the update.

I appreciate your willingness to help so much. I help people search their ancestors on two other groups I belong too, I have learned a lot about UK. Also do Canada, helps to speak and read French, also research for USA too. Never tried Ireland. Have even searched New Zealand and Australia a few times.

Hello Jen

Unfortunately my knowledge of Irish history is not great, but I do know that back in those times the whole of Ireland was part of Britain and was under British rule.

Today, the six counties of Northern Ireland are part of the United Kingdom, but the other 26 counties of Ireland are a separate country and known as the Republic of Ireland.  Catholics and Protestants - as well as people of other faiths - live alongside one another mostly in peace, and of course there is intermarriage.  Back in the 19th century life was very different and very much harder in so many ways.  Catholics mostly married within the faith, but not always, and this was not tolerated as it is today.

I am not sure if the above helps you at all.  I would just say to never narrow things down too much in your research, and always be open to the unexpected.

So you also help others with their research.  I have to say that Ireland is not the easiest place for researching your genealogy, but it is a challenge, and fortunately more and more records are becoming available online.

Back to Thomas Moore, if that ship record is the correct one, that means he was born c1847 doesn't it?

Jen - I just found the 1880 census entry.  I am wondering if their occupations could be a clue as to which part of Ireland they came from.

Did they give an occupation on the passenger list?

Hi Jen

That Boston list entry looks promising.  His birth year ties in with the 1880 census birth year.

Marion,

1880 census gives ages. and what you found already

Gives Ellen's dob as 1858 and Thomas 1853. Again you have to realize this is transcription from census to Ancestry.

Name: Thomas Moore
Arrival Date: 21 Sep 1869
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1853
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Ireland
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Irish
Ship Name: James Foster Jr
Search Ship Database: Search the James Foster Jr in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York
Line: 12
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_318

This could be another now that birthdate changed. Says laborer as occupation.

Boston 1870 Arrival  laborer, also 1869 arrival New York above laborer.

Hi Marion,

Does the site give parents names for birth records. Her parents were Patrick Grace and Mary O'Reilly Grace.

I think Texas is a no go but let me check that out as have not been able to find them in the 1900 census in Rhode Island . need to explore all options.
Tell Mike thanks for the help too for me.

Hi Jen

No, they don't give parents' names, sorry to say.

Mike has found two Patrick Graces listed in Griffith's Valuations:

Grace Patrick Pimlico. St. Catherines Dublin
Grace Patrick Francis Street St. Nicholas Without Dublin

Please let us know how you get on.  It is good to get feedback.

Marian

Hi Marion,

Thanks for all your help, looks like I can't confirm much else but I do have more than I started with.  There was always a problem there anyway, lots more of name changes etc, in my father's time. So had to be something.

If I ever get a chance to help here I will offer. Thanks again you are super...
Will definitely keep in touch.

Hello Jen

Mike has found an entry on the 1900 census which I have sent to your e-mail address.  We are not sure about it as some of the details are not quite right, and Ellen is not there, but we are sending just in case.

Best wishes
Marian (not Marion)
