Hi List,

I'm lookin for information with regard to the trial and subsequent sentencing, transporation to Australia fo life, for James NUGENT.

The details I have gathered from the various convict musters reveal that James was tried at ESSEX in March 1811 and transported to the Colony per the GUILDFORD arriving in January 1812.

I have contacted the ESSEX  Record Office and they have informed me that there is no entry for James NUGENT in the ESSEX Quarter Sessions process book of indictments, and that he was most probably tried at ESSEX Assizes.

Does any one have access to these records ?

Thanks

thethinman

Hi Arnold,This is the second time we have been asked this similar Question,One was From Lewes Assises.I am almost sure the Records will be held via the Family record Centre in Kew London.I have used Muster books there to check one or two out.
It may be worth contacting the Archivist,Who will almost certainly answer your question.

Thanks Mike,

I have done that and received a reply, but at £60 a pop and no guarantee of finding anything, I think I will leave it for now, thanks.

Hi Arnold I found a James Nugent He was Tried at the Old Bailey in London in 1887

798.   JAMES  NUGENT was indicted for stealing, on the 12th day of September , two shillings and six-pence, and one hundred and eight copper halfpence, value 4 s. 6 d. the property of   William Barham .
William Rogers saw the prisoner coming out of the shop with the money and the till.
GUILTY .
Transported for seven years .
Tried by the first Middlesex Jury before Mr. RECORDER.
JAMES NUGENT, Theft > grand larceny (to 1827), 12th September 1787

This James Nugent arrived in Australia  on the Surprise in 1790
The copy is just like a Newspaper notice, So im ot sure if the same James Nugent As i cant find the 1811 one.Ignore the 1827 in Brackets its just to say records that go up to that date
