PENTLAND Richard. born about 1800 + - 10 years married Mary Anne DAVIS in Armagh, Ireland. Sons - George (maybe), b. circa 1825 William, b. 2 June 1830 County Armagh, Ireland. William emigrated to Australia on the "Cambodia" departing Plymouth, 03.12.1851; arrived Geelong,Victoria 31.03.1852. We have Williams life, wife and descendants fairly well documented while he lived in Australia. This is on a site with Ancestry.com (I think) posted by Peter Whitehead, my brother. We have contacted Ulster Archives and received no more than we already knew after paying the for first round. William's marriage certificate to Eliza Ewings in Melbourne, states his parents were Richard Pentland and Mary Ann Davis Married in the Church of England and Ireland in Armagh - or County Armagh. Shipping notes give his religion as Episcopalian From my mothers written notes (circa 1970) She states there was a cousin living at Tandragee. Her notes also give a connection with Gilmerton in Scotland, but this may have been in relation to Eliza Ewings, though Eliza's parents also married in Armagh - or County Armagh. Eliza's mother came from Portadown.( According to my mothers notes.) First, my brother and I would like to unravel the history of William PENTLAND's beginnings in North Ireland and that of his parents. - Richard PENTLAND and Mary Ann DAVIS. Richard's father may have been George E. PENTLAND but do not know where this information has come from, and may be unfounded. Do hope you can help in some way, then we will ask you about Eliza Ewings. Regards. Audrey. | |

Thanks Teri, I hope you don't mind being kept so busy. Shame that the tithe records do not show the whole of the families. Especially as so many records have been destroyed. I was hoping to establish the family at the Scottish end, then link it to the Irish end as we do not seem to be able to find other records in N Ireland. Audrey. |

Hi Audrey I checked out the 1841 census and there were definitely none of your Pentland family left in Scotland at that time. It is possible therefore that the whole family moved to Ireland. This would have after 1819 as Agnes Pentland was born in Edinburgh then. I think since we cannot find Richard's marriage maybe we need to come at it from a different angle. I'll see if I can find any marriages for David, Ross? or Agnes in Ireland instead. If successful this would possibly give us the right parish and we could take the rest from there. I'll certainly do further searches at the records office to see if I can find anything further from when they were still in Scotland. I found the following genealogy sites: I havent had time to look through them but they do seem to have parish records so it might well be worth a look. I'll get back to you if anything else turns up. Audrey I meant to give you this: George Davis married Mary Pentland on 25 March 1854 in Tullylish, Co Down Although I know this is not your direct Pentland/Davis line, I found it interesting that it was a Pentland/Davis marriage. Teri |

Hi Audrey, I also am researching the Pentland family in Armagh. Given the difficulties establishing connections, I note any of them I come across. For what it is worth, I can identify two of the Pentlands listed below - maybe it will be helpful in your research. Alexander Pentland is Drumgor is married to Elizabeth. George Pentland in Derrykeevan is his son. Since there are not any ages or dates for the other Pentland mentioned in the Tithe Applotment books, I can't tell whether they also could be sons of Alexander. She died there in 1848. Their children were: Elizabeth, b. 1801 John b, 1804 George, b. 1806 (married Jane/Jennie Anderson in Drumgor. They had two children in Drumgor before moving to Derrykeevan abt 1827) John, b. 1807 Samuel, b. 1810 Elizabeth, b. 1816 Ann Thomas Best, Roxanna Hi Audrey I checked out the tithe applotment books and found these in Co Armagh: Alexander Pentland, Crossmecaghley, Seagoe Alexander Pentland, Drumgor, Seagoe George Pentland, Derrykeevan ,Tartaraghan John, Jr, Pentland, Ballyhannon, Seagoe John Pentland, Crossmecaghley, Seagoe John, Sr. Pentland, Ballyhannon, Seagoe John Pentland, Ballymecrandle, Seagoe The tithe applotment books record the results of a land survey taken to determine the tithe (or amount of tax) landholders had to pay to the church of Ireland, the established church until 1869. Roxanne and mickeym. b about 1828
Davis
Thankyou for your messages. We have modified our Armagh Pentlands:
Richard Pentland married Mary Ann DAVIS in the United Church of england and Ireland. On 6 Dec. 1829 lived at Drumnakelly Co. Armagh and registered again on 11 Dec. 1831, still at Drumnakelly at the time of son Davis's baptism.
two sons :
i. William born 2 June 1829(exact date uncertain) Baptised 8 Dec. 1829 at the Church of Ireland, Drumcree. in baptismal records as William surname recorded as PEDLETON ii. Davis Baptised 11 Dec 1831 in church of Ireland, Drumcree. father Richard, mother Mary Ann of Drumnakelly.
George PENTLAND, a cousin lived at Portadown.Co. Armagh
To date no records have been found of George, Richard, Mary Ann or Davis.
Only the Griffith Valuation records a Richard Pentland leasing a house and small block of land from Mary Totten who in turn leased it from the Duke of Manchester.
Richard PENTLAND and Mary Ann DAVIS must have been born abut 1805 - 10.
It has been suggested that Richard was born in Scotland - father John PENTLAND and Margaret HOPE. siblings Ross, David, Agnes.
But we are as yet unable to establish when some of the family moved to Ireland, and have not been able to trace any of the siblings.
Perhaps this will help you in your search.
Colin Yarwood is searching for these Seagoe Pentlands as is Elizabeth in sydney.
If all the knowledge is banded together we may be able to sort the families out.

Hi Audrey
I checked out the tithe applotment books and found these in Co Armagh:
Alexander Pentland, Crossmecaghley, Seagoe
Alexander Pentland, Drumgor, Seagoe
George Pentland, Derrykeevan ,Tartaraghan
John, Jr, Pentland, Ballyhannon, Seagoe
John Pentland, Crossmecaghley, Seagoe
John, Sr. Pentland, Ballyhannon, Seagoe
John Pentland, Ballymecrandle, Seagoe

Thanks Roxanne. Perhaps they are grandchildren or great grandchildren of our Richard PENTLAND. Hard to tell at this stage.
Weaving was a popular career in Portadown and surrounding area. Not sure if this was flax or cotton. Flax I think.<RTE_TEXT></RTE_TEXT>
