Hi Jay I am a wee bit confused. I thought Elizabeth Porter's father was Charles? So, who is Immanuel? Marian Manager |

Hi Marian yes sorry about that i also thought charles was her father as the only elizabeth porter that i could find born bridgewater was the one with charles. But when i got her marriage cert back it says that immanuel porter a sailor was her father and the witnesses were james and hannah porter that would make more sence as she named her first son john emmanuel dare. Hope that makes a bit more sence now. I thought by getting marriage cert i could get somewhere but hit a brick wall with elizabeth and her husband the dare side of things thanks so much jay |

Hi Jay You were right to get the marriage certificate as it is no good just guessing. You now know for certain who Elizabeth's father is, so that is another step forward! I will keep trying now that I have some new information to work with. Marian Manager |

Jay - please can you tell me if you have Elizabeth Porter's birth certificate? I need to know if you are certain of her date and place of birth before going any further. Also if you have any other info at all that might help. I have found an Emanuel Porter with sons Henry and William. He is the only one in Somerset. But no daughters to be seen! Marian Manager |

Hi Marion no i dont have her birth cert but when i have her in the 1861 cencus she is said to have come from bridgewater then in 1871 1881 and so on she is now married to a james robbins or robins living in newport monmouthshire all saying 1831 bridgewater. Its all a bit of a mystery with this family her first husband i cant even find him. Although she seemed from stories i have been told about her was a very good buisness women she had some sort of hotel, took care of a few of her grandchildren when there mother was shot thanks so much for all your help with this jay |

Hi Jay I found all this today, so I am sending to you anyway and you can study it at your leisure and see what you think. Marriages Dec 1848 Coles Hannah Shepton Mallet 10 719 Porter James Shepton Mallett 10 719 I found only two Emanuel Porter deaths between 1850 and 1900. Deaths Jun 1860 PORTER Emanuel Bridgwater 5c 326 Deaths Mar 1868 PORTER Emanuel 76 Axbridge 5c 435 This last one would have been born c1792. I have found this Emanuel Porter age 68 born c1792 in 1861 with wife Eliza age 56, sons Henry 34 and William 32. They are living in Wrington, Somerset, in the registration district of Axbridge. Emanuel owned a farm of 15 acres 0 roods and 38 perches, and he employed his two sons (as agricultural labourers). If we have the correct person, they were living on Legg's Farm in 1851, where he farmed 100 acres. They also had a servant, and Eliza had a brother William Hart living with them, so Hart was her maiden name. In 1841 the same five people lived there. I also found their Marriage Banns - Gloucestershire: Bristol - Register of Marriages, 1800-1837 Marriage Index 1800 to 1837 St. John the Baptist Bristol 1826 County: Gloucestershire Country: England 227 12 Dec 1826 Emanuel Porter & Eliza Hart botp Banns I haven't yet found a link to Elizabeth. Hi Jay You're welcome. I have been doing some more searching and I did find on the 1861 census Sarah Porter widow age 57 Nurse, born Curry Rivell, Somerset. She is living with Vincent Robins 34 and Elizabeth Robins 33 and their daughter Elizabeth 6 at 22 Bow Street, Dolphin Row, Langport, Somerset. Is this your family? On the next census in 1871, there is an Elizabeth Robins in Newport with husband JAMES Robins who is 21 years older than she is. Children are Sarah 16, John 14, Elijah 13, Mary 9, James 7, Elizabeth 4, Jane 6 and Charlotte 2 months. Sarah Porter now age 67 is still living in Langport, but with her daughter Harriet Hartland and her husband and family. I also found James and Hannah Porter age 68 and 57 on the 1851 census. Could they be uncle and aunt of Elizabeth? James is a Master Carpenter and Hannah a schoolteacher. Marian Manager |
