Dear Members

Would appreciate any help I can get with my  g g g grandfather.  I am attaching his profile below.

Thanking you in anticipation.

ANDREW PAGAN? PEAGAN? BORN KILMANNON NEAR MARYBOROUGH QUEENS COUNTY ca 1809.MARYBOROUGH is now in an area called PORTLAOISE.

I understand the Parish may be BEKAN. Joined Army at 18 years of age. Served with 1/21st Regiment of Foot Royal north British Fusiliers at KILKENNY , IRELAND - (ARMY PAPERS DESCRIBE HIM AS

ANDREW PEAGAN) PRIVATE ANDREW PEAGAN (ALSO CALLED PAGAN, PEGIN AND PHEGAN)

Born ca 1809 Kilmannon, near Maryborough Queens County, IrelandOccupation Soldier  ATTESTED for the 21st Regiment of Foot on 7 June 1827 (age 18 years) at Birr.  Served Ireland 1827 ?1832.  Transferred to 51st Regiment of Foot 1 October 1838 31 July 1846.  Transferred to 11th Regiment of Foot 1 August 1846 to 31 July 1848.  Transferred to 99th Regiment of Foot 1 August 1848 to 31 January 1850.

Arrived Australia (Sydney) Oct 1833 then HOBART, TASMANIA, 10 October 1833.  Ship arrived on “Lord Lyndoch?/P>

Rank on Discharge Private.  Date of Discharge 1 February 1850.  Where discharged: Hobart, Tasmania. Granted pension - - chronic rheumatism due to consequence of climate.

Died & buried Beechworth, Victoria, 1860.

Parents?names ?unknown at this time It is noted that whilst with the 99th Regiment, he was sending money home to:  Anne Beatrice ?or Bettrion? ?Clonaslee –Buttis?, Queens Co, Ireland.  Perhaps his mother?

MET MARGRET DELANY IN KILKENNY, IRELAND, married 6 JULY 1831 ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC PARISH REGISTERS, KILKENNY CITY, VOL 2 PAGE 61. MARRIAGE RECORD SHOWS HIM AS ANDREW PAGAN (but the writing was not completely legible and was only taken to be PAGAN).The witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Hollway & Bessy Brown.  No parents of either party were shown on the marriage record. It is likely MARGRET DELANY was born in KILKENNY also AND it is possible her parents were JAMES & JULIANNE?  But still researching that information. Very difficult as the Kilkenny Archeological Society has advised that the surname DELANY was most numerous in 19th century KILKENNY.  There was a baptism for a MARY (could have been Marg) DELANY on 10 March 1807 in St. Canice’s Catholic Parish Records Register 2 Pg 221. They lived in LEE’S LANE Which was very close to St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Kilkenny City.  The Parents of this Mary were JAMES & Julianne.

The Kilkenny Archaeological Society did advise that there are two tombstone inscriptions for James Delaney in the old Thornback cemetery which is within the Catholic Parish of St. Canice, Kilkenny.

Andrew & Margaret had 4 SONS NAMED 1) JAMES (possibly James Joseph) born IRELAND???, 2) RICHARD, 3) JOHN JOSEPH 4) ANDREW BARNABAS< the last 3 all born Australia.

Yours sincerely
Mary

Hi Minnie

I have moved your messages as they were on the General board.  They should be on the P board.

When replying, please do not start a new thread every time.  Go to the relevant surname board, which in this case is Surname "P", click on the name PAGAN Andrew, go the last message in the thread and click on "Reply" in the pink square on the message.  A new window will open up for you to write your message.

Hope this is helpful

Minnie i checked out Records available For Kilmanman,As you can see they only start from 1849 This is Through LDS no death records.
The church would be the best place to find Andrews Birth And Mothers Death.
As he would have been Born About 1809.The Church may have slightly earlier records

Mike

I do appreciate all the information you have sent so far.

I am going through everything and with a bit of luck will eventually find my elusive Irish ancestry.

I believe I need to start with the Churches in Clonaslee but of course whether they have records earlier than 1849 is the big question. I will try the Dublin Archives and ask the historian as Mike suggests.

I am leaning towards the name having been Andrew Feagan and the P was the mistake.  OR Andrew P Eagan/Egan  but in my travels around various websites the name Andrew Eagan hasn't come up.

Cheers & thanks again to everyone.

Mary

Hello everyone

Have been having another look at Andrew's record of Soldier's Remittances and the name of his beneficiary in Ireland ca 1850 might have been  Anne Beakins or Deakins, Clonaslee, Buttis, Queens Co. Ireland.

Cheers
Mary

Mary i looked up the word Buttis,It means in Latin Large Cask,But can also be Fort or Stronghold.
My theorie is he was sending money via a Fort in Queens Hence Buttis Queens.
they then Delivered the money owed to the person the soldier required them to.
It may be worth Checking where this Fort or Stronghold was in Queens.
There should be some info. With Military it is very Difficult To find Much on them.
As most Enlistments Papers were Destroyed so really you are very lucky yours still exist. Our National Archives Still have the Original Papers Via the Chelsea hospital.

Mary now this may sound odd but i believe that its eagan,I feel that his writing may have been a bit tardy.and hard to read so then assumed deakin or beakin.Or could be deegin. Now searching this name it came on this

Mrs. Anne Egan - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 1793 Clonadocasy, , Laoighis, Ireland

Clonadocasy i think is clonaslee There is also a Spelling of eagan With more or less the same Spelling .LOOKING THIS UP was married to a Dennis.if taken from parish records some of these are very hard to read.and spellings very hard to decipher

Dear Mike

How do you do it? You are a wealth of information.  You are simply wonderful.

I agree that it could well be Eagan but  will need to delve into Church records for baptisms that might pop up for any Andrew born ca 1809 in Queens County, with possible connections with the names  James/Richard/ John/ Andrew Barnabas.

The other thing is I might have to go through all his army pay records to find another entry which might be clearer to show Anne's surname .  He was as you know with various Regiments so it will be a task I need to set  some time to do.

I am ever so grateful.

Cheers
Mary
