Seeking links to Ireland for the family of Gervase Tracy and Catherine Maguire, Co. Fermanagh.  From the age of their children, assume Gervase and Catherine to have been born early 1800s.  All listed children born in Ireland, emigrated to the US, most settling in Wilmington, Delaware.  Some of the younger children moved on to Portage, Co., Wisconsin.  I believe I have a handle on the family once they came to DE, but have very little prior to that time.  I don't know much about when they came to the US, the first of the grandchildren was born in Ireland in 1843, the second in Massachusetts in 1845.  A few others born in MA, most in DE or WI.

Children of Gervase and Catherine:

Alice (~ 1822) m. John Brady in Ireland
Catherine (3/1823) m. Edward Colton
Charles (4/1826) m. Theresa O'Brien in DE
James (~1827) m. Margaret Cassidy
Julia (~1828) m. Francis McHugh
Mary Jane (4/8/1832) m. Daniel O'Connnell
Charlotte (11/1834) m. Charles Keelins
Isabella (5/1836) unmarried
Hugh (8/1841) m. Catherine Dunn
Gervase (~1844) became a priest

Any help is appreciated.

Hi MBJ

You have probably already seen this, from the 1880 US Census.  Please note spelling.  He would have been born same year, ie 1844.

Hi

Can you tell us the Christian name(s) of the grandchild who was born in Ireland in 1843?  Any other info you may have re the Irish connection, however small, would be helpful also.  Thanks.

Marian

Reviewing my information, I found additional grandchildren born in Ireland:

Son of Alice Tracy and Edward Colton, Charles Colton was born in Ireland, about 1843.  His sister Alice was born in Massachusetts in 1845.

Children of Julia Tracy and Francis McHugh who were born in Ireland included John (~1847), Alice (~1849), Charles (~1851), and Mary (~1855).   Francis (~1857) was born in Massachusetts.

It would appear the children of Gervase and Catherine Tracy came to the US separately.

Marian,

Thanks again.  None of the place names ring a bell.  The name Gerrard is interesting.   The name Gervase continued in later generations.  I had one relative we called Gerry.  I can see Gerry being recorded as Gerrard, but that's just theory.

Hi MBJ

Yes, you are absolutely right that Gerry is indeed the shortened form of the name Gerrard or Gerard -- the latter being the more usual spelling.

Hi MBJ

Have you seen this?  Mike found it.  I know it's Yorkshire, but what do you think?  Not a common name.

Wow,  I got excited for a minute.  I agree the name is not common, unfortunately I don't believe this is a match.  My Gervase is old enough to be Gervis' father, but all his children were born in Ireland.   Nich catch though, thanks.
