Hi, I am researching my grandmother TROTTER Margaret Ann.
She appears in the 1901 census and is named as Maggie wife (age 30)  of TROTTER William Moore.(age 29) of 64 Williams Street Sunderland Yorkshire.
She was born in Durham Yorkshire.

She gave birth to my father (William Moore Trotter) on 27 May 1902. On the birth certificate she is named as TOTTER Margaret Ann, late EATON, formaly ROBSON. The district of the birth was Sunderland West. The birth was registered on 19 June 1902.

I hope you can help thank you.

Dennis

Hi Dennis

I think this is Margaret's marriage to John Dempster Eaton.  I haven't yet found her marriage to William.  I have a feeling she is older than she says she is in 1901.  More to follow.

Dennis, I have found three Margaret Robsons born Sunderland on the 1881 census, any of which could possibly be yours.

One is in service, age 17 and living with her widowed 75-year-old grandmother Elizabeth Sowter who was born in Gateshead.

One is age 16 and living with her sister Elizabeth and widowed mother Ann.

The other one is a governess, age 23 and living with the Forrest family in Blackburn.

Hello all. I am James Trotter, great grandson of James Trotter of Jennings, Louisiana. Just had a baby boy and named him Tristan Moore Trotter. Yes, I decided that we have had enough James' in the course of our generations!

Hi Miriam,
Confusing.  In the 1901 census Margaret is aged 30. In the 1891 she is 29. and in the 1881 census the three births mean she was born in 1864 or 1865 or 1858. I would agree that the marraige in Dec 1883 is probably correct. WillI be able to apply for a marraige certificate on the off chance that she was my grandmother.

Hi Dennis

It is very common for ages to be incorrect on the census returns.  Also, the censuses were taken early in the year (usually March/April), therefore most people would not have reached their birthday yet.  For these reasons, we always allow some leeway of several years either way.

Hopefully she was truthful about her age when she got married!  Please do let us know how you get on, and maybe we can take it further.
