I am trying to find any information about my great grandparents who, I believe, originated around the Urlingford/Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny area in Ireland.

I know that my great-grandparents, John Talbot and Nora (Hanora?) Dunne, had seven grandchildren. These were (with christening date):
1830 Ellen - married Kieran Dollard
1832 James
1834 Michael - married Mary Doheny
1836 Denis (our grandfather) - married Anty Lalor
1838 John
1840 Patrick - married Ellen Campion
1842 Mary

The christening records give their home place as variously, Clonsaul, Coonsala, Bawnmore, Scrubb, all townlands in Crosspatrick, just north-west of Urlingford, close to the Tipperary/Kilkenny border.

Family stories tell of them being evicted from their home in Clonsaul in the 1840/50s and moving to Fennor just across the border in Tipperary. My grandfather, Denis, eventually acquired a farm at Lisduff, Gortnahoe, Co. Tipperary, where my father was born.

If you could give any information about John Talbot or Nora Dunne it would be much appreciated, or even about two children whom we have no references, James (b 1832), Michael (b 1834), John (b 1838), Mary (b 1842).

In my field research I came across a gravestone in a disused graveyard at Erke, Crosspatrick, Co Kilkenny, in the name of Thomas Talbutt, who died 7 July 1777 aged 67 years and his wife Margaret who died 19 Aug 1778 aged 47 years. I wondered if there was any connection with our branch of the Talbot's.

Many thanks for any efforts you can make on our behalf.

Mike / Marian,

Many thanks for all of this information and clues which put more "flesh on the bones" of our families history.

I guess the reference to the death of William Henry Talbot in 1845 in Crosspatrick, Co Kildare is a transcription error by IGS.

I have indeed spent several hours in the Kilkenny Library records office and they were helpful but without leading to much success. It seems that the church records for the family relate to Gortnahoe or Fennor parishes, Co Tipperary although the townlands where they lived, Erke, Bawmnore, Lough, Clonsaul, are in Co. Kilkenny.

However the Kilkenny Library did show me the Tithe Applotment Book records for 1823 to 1826 where I found the following references :

a) John Talbot, Crutt, Castlecomer; Rathpoleen, Erke; Rathreagh, Erke; St George, Clomantagh
b) Matthew Talbot, Erke, Crosspatrick
c) Mr Talbot, Bawnmore, Erke
d)Thomas Talbot, Kilrush, Clomantagh

I have also enlisted the help of the Tipperary Family History Research office but drew a complete blank there.

I am intrigued by the possibility that the Talbots listed in my earlier message may be siblings of my great-grandfather, John. There is evidence from the Gortnahoe/Fennor baptismal register of their names appearing as sponsors of each others children. Is there any way of trying to trace a parent for one or more of these. Presumably the parents would have lived in the Erke area.

As mentioned previously I found a gravestone in a tiny disused graveyard in Erke with the names of Thomas and Margaret Talbutt who died in 1777 and 1778 respectively. They are unlikely to have been parents of my great-grandfather but wonder if they could be an even earlier generation. I am attaching a photo of the gravestone which is in fine condition despite its age.

Your help is much appreciated.

Mikey

Hi Mikey,Yes That Transcription I guessed was an error thats why i Added to show you.On looking at the Gravestone i see the Wife is Named as Maroar. An unusual Name in itself.I noticed you Mention Margaret
The talbots were a big family in Dublin going back 4 Hundred years or more Mostly From Malahide. They spread there wings so to say to the Tipperary Counties,Then into Kilkenny and Wexford. So the clan is quite huge.
The links to Erke look the best possibility.I was searching for Directories Today to see if any links. The only one with anything is Slaters

There was an Edward Talbot Gent,You may have seen this in Borisocane.Sorry if spelling wrong

The Tipperary borders Not being to far away,And Limerick area.
We will keep trying for you Mikey.Im sure something will show up

Mike

Mickym,

Many thanks for the latest set of search results.

The information on William Talbot is very useful - he may well be a brother of my great-grandfather, John Talbot. I have emailed p.papuga but it seems that address is no longer live. I have found another another address that looks as if it might be the lady's new contact so I will have to summon up courage to "cold call".

I suspect that Edward Talbot is not part of our immediate family - there has been no indication of links to Borrisokane

I am very grateful indeed for the searching that you and Marian have done on my behalf. In the space of a few days you have covered ground that took me 18 months to research and you have managed to provide me with several potentially useful lines to follow up.

Many thanks

Mikey

Yes of course Mike M.
First can I say its good to be back online and I can get back to finding more ancestors he he!
I have a sneaky feeling that perhaps Janet Kingsford (see under Mary Grace) and Mikey Talbot are related. Janets mother is a Talbot from Urlingford area.
Also I have been in contact with a man in the USA who has a Honora/Honore Dunne and William Campion in his tree also from Urlingford/Fennor.
Mikey T -  please feel free to email me, I will forward this information to you.
Manager Mike has my email addy. Hope to hear from you soon.
