William was my gg grandfather born to Thomas Trice b:1808, Ash Kent and Margaret Rollings b: 1808, Brent Devon, cant find marriage. He had 2 sisters Elizabeth born 1835 Rosena born 1843 & 2 brothers John born 1837 & George born 1847. Elizabeth and Wm are not on the 1851 census with the parents, (Thomas was at Greenwich Hospital on census night, listed as a Sick Attendant) Elizabeth may have been in service, she did not marry until 1856.
William and his father Thomas are said to have served in the Crimean War. Thomas was a gunner on the Highflyer III, and may have been involved in the Battle of Sevastapol. William may have been on the Medway. There is someone who may be him on the 1851 census aged 18 an apprentice on Medway Rochester.
Thomas died in 1883 and Margaret in 1895 and both are buried in Highland Rd Cemetery, Southsea. Hampshire.
William is said to have been on a whaling ship when he was supposed to have jumped ship and his marriage in Australia in 1867. His death certificate in 1904 says he had been in Vic Australia 45 years making it about 1859. | |

Hi Vickie This is Kay and I've been looking to see if I can help with your William Trice. I have found Thomas & Margaret on the census images from 1851 to 1891 (not including Thomas on the 1851 or 1891) but unable to find either of them on the 1841 - this may have helped - I've sometimes found a parent/grandparent residing with them which gives good leads. Having searched extensively last evening for marriage and birth records I've concluded that Trice doesn't seem to be very forthcoming with the Christian names/dates you have already located. I'm wondering if perhaps there has been an alteration or mistranscription in the surname over the years - this does happen from time to time. Have you managed to find the family on the 1841 census yourself? Kay Manager |

Ok Vickie well I'll persist and see if I can find them on the 1841 census in the hope it may give a few clues. Funnily enough I did wonder about the name Price myself - thinking someone may have transcribed incorrectly. Check back regularly to see if I've had any luck. Kay Manager |

Thank you Vickie - I didn't realise you'd managed to obtain the birth certificate for William. What exactly is his birth year by the way? Do you have any other certificates for any of his siblings? Kay Manager |

Hi Kay
I only have information on William's birth and his siblings from a lady from Gosport who looked up the information. I only have Wm's marriage and death certificates to go on.

Hi again Vickie Well at the risk of sounding like I'm a doubting-Thomas, and having not been able to find the same information myself, I'm wondering if this is in fact correct. I've not actually located any birth record for William or a marriage for his parents Thomas and Margaret. Do you know the source of this lady's information and how reliable it actually is? If she's been to the parish and checked records then I'd say it's authentic but otherwise I'm surprised we've not managed to find it ourselves in the process. The other question mark that it poses, is why can't we find a birth record for Margaret Rollings either - not even under a mistranscription of Rawlings, as sometimes happens. It may be possible to obtain birth certificates for William's siblings born after 1837 - this should give the correct maiden name of their mother, Margaret. If it was found to be different from Rollings, it might then give us a lead to a marriage with Thomas. What do you think? Kay Manager |

Chloecat, Margaret ROLLINGS is WilliamTRICEs mothers name that is listed on his death in 1904 in victoria, australia These indexes are well known to have many transcription errors or because the person registering the birth made a mistake or couldn't spell I never rely on them without double checking Liz |

Hello again Vickie Well I'm afraid, having done extensive searches on this one for you, I have to conclude I can't find anything further on the Trice family you are looking for. I'm sorry I've been unable to help but if you discover any new leads yourself, do feel free to come back to us. Kay Manager |

Hi Liz and Kay
Wms mothers name is also Rollings on his marriage certificate and he could read and write, so I am assuming that is correct name, but spelling may not be. Closest I have gotten for her parents is:
M: 1789 George ROLLON/Mary CLEAVE Ashburton, but no baptism under that name there.
A person on another site found Thomas, Margaret, Wm, Elizabeth and John on the 1841 Hampshire census under the name THREE!! I guess you could say well Thrice is three, those enumerators are a laugh aren't they??
Thanks for your help so far. Vickie |
