Hello Each,

My ancestor, namely Francis VALLELY, a Weaver, married Mary MOLINEUX at The Collegiate, Manchester, UK., on the 28.8.1804.  They had 6 children and I have traced the family history from them to the present.  I cannot establish any trace of the birth or death of Francis.  His wife Mary died in 1849, aged 68 years, at Manchester.  The 1841 Census shows her as a Widow, living  at Jersey Street, Manchester, with her son Francis VALLELEY, also a Weaver, and his family - (The Surname spelling resulted simply by reason of illiteracy, phonetics and poor enumeration).
The name VALLELY - previously  Macllvalluly, originates from the Cladybeg area, Armagh, Norther Ireland, - 1600.  I have had a most interesting time researching the surname, finding several bearing the forename and now spread throughout the world.  Among them convicts transported to Austrailia, Soldiers, World famous Artists and musicians,  but I cannot pin down the birthplace of 'my' Francis to Ireland or England.   Any 'lines' of enquiry would be appreciated.

Peter - I checked out the 1841 census, and found a second Vallely family on the same page.  Not sure if you knew this?  It seems too much of a coincidence for them not to be related.  I have listed both families below.

Marian

1841 Census of England

Jersey Street, Ancoats, Manchester
All born in the county
Adults' ages rounded down to nearest 5 years

Mary Valleley  60 -  born c1777-1781
Francis 25  Spinner - born c1812-1816
Ellen 30 - born c1807-1811
Thomas 5 - born c1836
Peter 3 - born c1838
Ann 1 - born 1840

On the same page of the census there is another Valleley family, so it seems too much of a coincidence not to be related.  I will list here.

Hank?? or it could be Hanh. short for Hannah Valleley  Cotton Stretcher  35
Mary Valleley  4
Ellen Valleley  2

Marian and Mike,

I have received all your messages and attempted 3 times to mail you but when I try an attachment the dialogue disappears and cannot be found.   I must sincerely thank for your enthusiastic imput to my quest to find Francis (1).  However I am loath to inform you that I am in possession and have previously researched all the detail you so kindly dug out for me.  My single aim at this time is to discover the origins of Francis (1) to establish the clan 'line' from my Grandson to his family roots in Ireland.

As suggested by your good selves, I have dispatched, vide the EIFS 'site' M - Molyneux,  a copy of the Church Register details of the Manchester MOLLINEUX family to Clive for comparison to his reaerch.  The surname spellings are different but that might be down to phonetics and poor enumeration.

Please, if you come across any information relative to Francis (1) in the period 1780ish to 1837, indicating his birth or death, let me be the second person to know.      My kind regards to you both   -   Peter VALLELEY.

Mike,

Thanks for the continuing input.                                                                                                   Ref: Your Message 19 of 19

Bernard VALLELEY was the first born son of Francis (1) VALLELY and Mary nee MOLLINEUX.  Bernard was baptised 15.9.1805, and died 4.6.1840, aged 34 years.  He was a spinner by trade and married Hannah ELLIS, 31.7.1831.  Following the traditional Irish Catholic system of the naming of children, Bernard named his first born son Francis after his own father Francis (1).  The lad died in infancy. It was about this time that the surname acquired the extra 'E', simply by reasons of illiterary, phonetics and poor enumeration.  The listing of the 6 children of Francis (1) shows the adherence to the naming tradition.  His third son was named Francis, after himself, and his first son Bernard, as above, would have been named after his father's father.  If I could only find only find a pre 1800 VALLELY family headed by a Bernard, with a son Francis, the single malt Irish would be on me.

Vide your Message 11 of 19, Hannah and her two daughter Mary and Ellen, are shown as the second VALLELEY family on the 1841 Census at Jersey Street, Manchester.

Please keep searching  -  Regards to Marian.   -   Peter
