I am trying to find birth/baptism information on my gg grandmother.
The only information that I have is from her marriage certificate 1845 Birkenhead Cheshire this gives her age as 20 and her fathers name as Nicholas Wogan labourer.
And from the UK census 1851-1901 which gives her birth year as anything between 1824 and 1828 and her birthplace as Dublin Ireland. I have been unable to trace Nicholas on any of the UK census so I presume that he stayed in Ireland.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

As a matter of interest Jane, who was Anne's husband when she married in 1845?

Hello

I am working with Kay on your search.  We have found Anne Wogan's marriage, but you did not tell us her husband's full name.  We do need this information if we are to be able to find her.

Marriages Jun 1845   (>99%)
Wogan  Anne    Wirral  19 301

We have found a Nicholas Wogan age 70 on the 1861 census living in Ashton-under-Lyne.  He was a Silk Weaver born Dublin, Ireland c1791.

Also this death record:

Deaths Mar 1867   (>99%)
Wogan  Nicholas  85  Ashton  8d 339

He would have therefore been born c1782.  Despite the apparent ten-year age difference, we feel it could still be the same person.  It is not uncommon for ages to be out by as much as ten years.

We await your response before searching further.

Sorry for delay in getting back to you.
Anne Wogan's husband was Thomas Brannan c 1841-1817 Ireland ( no idea where abouts ). He died approx 1860 probably in Birkenhead Cheshire.Their youngest child Peter was born Sept 1860.I have been unable to trace his death , but she was a widow on the 1861 census, but by then the name had changed to Brennan.
As to Nicholas Wogan in Ashton under Lyne , I have looked at this but am not sure if it the right one. I have no idea when they came over to England , I cannot find them on the 1841 census ,but by 1851 Anne is married living in Birkenhead , I have been unable to find her on the 1841 with her parents. Didn't know if they came over after 1841 or if her parents remained in Ireland.

Thanks for your input mike.
As I stated in my original post I do have Anne's wedding cert, this gives her fathers name as Nicholas Wogan labourer. Thomas Brannan's
father was Lawrence Brannan.
I have Anne on all census from 1851-1901.
Peter the last child was born Sept.1860 I have his birth cert ,his father is listed as Thomas Brennan dock labourer. From that I must assume that Thomas died between sept 1860 and the 1861 census.I have details for all the children apart from Frega c1854. She only appears on the 1861 census , no birth, marriage or death details. I have looked at the original copy of the census but the name is hard to make out.
I just have no details on the family before the amrriage in 1845.

Hello Jane

I have searched the censuses long and hard, and certainly can't find the Wogan family in 1841.  It seems they must have been amongst the many who emigrated from Ireland in the 1840's due to the famine.

I studied the 1861 census image and it does look like Frega, but it could also be Freya, or Trega, or most likely of all would be Teresa.  There are many different spellings of this name, and the person who filled in the form may have misspelt the name anyway.  This may be a long shot, but I found a possible birth record:

Births Dec 1852 - Brannan  Theresa    Bradford  9b 128

I also found this, which I thought was interesting.  Please note the spelling of Cecily!  It is not a common name, which made me wonder if this could be your family.

Births Mar 1852  -  Brannan  Scisily     Bradford  9b 98

I will keep looking.

Thanks for that Marian,
I have traced Cecily from birth to death her name was actually Cecilia and not Cecily as on the 1861 census.
Frega however I have searched every possible vairation on the name and think the most likely is Teresa. Especially as two of her sisters had daughters named Teresa.
I have sent for a copy of a birth cert from Wirral for a Teresa. I will just have to wait until it turns up to see if this is her.Wirral registrars are very good if they cannot find a match they will return your payment, I will bear the Bradford birth in mind but I don't think that one will be her as the family didn't seem to move from Birkenhead from 1851-1901.
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane

Thanks for getting back to us with that info.

Strangely I have this week come across the name FREJA in the tree of a distant relation!  So that is another possibility to consider if you get stuck.  But I still think Teresa/Theresa is the most likely, and especially now knowing the name was in the family.

Let us know how it goes, and if you need any more help.

Hi Jane

Have you tried this site?

I have a feeling that Frega may have been her middle name, or even a pet name, in which case it is going to be hard to find her.
