Hello everyone,

I am looking for the origins of a convict who came to Australia, NSW, on the Asia 10.  He would have been born in Surrey circa 1799, by his age on his papers.  However there is no native place mentioned apart from the county.  There are a couple of possibilities for his parentage, but how do I find out exactly which ones are correct?

Any help would be most gratefully accepted.  Thanks

Min

Hi Min

I have been assisting Mike with your search this week, and I checked out several of the censuses for George, and other family members also, but nothing showed up.  The only George Young to fit the timeframe and living in that area of Surrey was this:

1841 census
Living at Cottage House Farm, Shalford, Dorking
George Young   40  Farmer  born Surrey c1801
Mary Young  50  born Surrey c1791
Ann Peters  15  Female Servant

Hi Marian,

Many thanks for this information regarding the 1841 census.  This would seem to indicate that the George Young, Son of William and Elizabeth Young in 1799 at Stoke, next Guildford, Surrey, was probably the one sent out to NSW as a convict in 1831.

As I mentioned previously, the only other thing would be to check for a death for this George just in case he did die before 1831.   Then I guess it would mean starting out all over again, and going through the same with the other George Youngs in Surrey.

I do very much appreciate all you wonderful people are doing.  Congratulations on a great group.

Min

You sure are on the ball Mike.  Many thanks for all your help.

I feel now that I do have the right family for George, thanks to you and Marian.  So I'm settling for him being the son of William Young and Elizabeth Jenkins, having been born Stoke, next Guildford, Surrey in 1799.    So, unless someone can show me a death for this George before 1831, I think he's the one.

I have been researching these families for over 30 years so am really excited at making some break through.

Thanks again to all you wonderful people.

Regards,
Min

Hi Min

Just to let you know, I haven't been able to find a death record for your George Young in Surrey before 1831.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Marian,

It sure seems to point to the fact that he was still alive, and if not in England, then it would seem that he is the one who came to Australia.

Many thanks.  I do appreciate the efforts of all your crew.

Sincerely,
Min

Hello group,
Marian and Mike did such a great job helping me decide on my George Young's family that I'm now wondering if someone is able to help me with more information on his parents, William Young and Elizabeth Jenkins.   Their ancestors?  Is there any way you might be able to help me go back a generation or so please?

Not in a hurry, but thought I'd ask while the listing was reasonably fresh.

Thanks,
Min

Min there is a Christening in Guilford Surrey that fits in With Elizabeth Jenkins
She was Christened on the 6th feb 1751 Holy Trinity Church Guilford
Her Father was John Jenkins. It does not State a Mother.
You would need Bishops Transcripts to take it Further

Hi Mike,

Do appreciate all these Young connections.  Will go through it all offline.

I'm wondering about the large gap of nearlyt 20 years between the children, but I guess it did (and still does happen).  To my mind it could possibly give a reason for his being a "naughty boy", perhaps he was a spoilt youngest child and was a bit "wild".  Not that his crime of stealing warranted being given a life sentence, but..............  Sorry, my mind is wandering....and wondering..

Thanks again,
Min
