Carmel Apple Crisps

1/2 cup butter or margarine                          Crumb Topping
1 cup packed brown sugar                           2 Tbsp. flour
1/4 cup corn syrup                                       2 Tbsp. white sugar
1/2 tsp. salt                                                  1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. vanilla                                              1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1/4 tsp. baking soda
8 cups peeled,sliced tart apples
2 Tbsp. flour

In a large saucepan combine butter, sugar, corn syrup and salt.  Bring to a full rolling boil and boil for 5 minutes.  Add the vanilla and baking soda.  Coat the apples with the flour.  Add to sauce in the pan.  The sauce will form clumps of carmel when the cold apples are added. Cook and stir until clumps are melted and the mixture is slightly thickened.  Pour into a greased 9 in square pan.  Mix flour, sugar, and cinnamon.  Cut in the butter until crumbly.  Sprinkle over the apple mixture.  Bake at 400*F for 1 hr. or until apples are soft.  Put foil or a pan under dish to catch the drips.Serve warm  with ice cream or whipped  topping.
